Species Closeup: Lorillian

“The Borg came and our world died in flames. Lost beyond recovery our past must make way for our future or all will have been lost.”

The Lorillians are a humanoid species who are distinguishable from humans by the vertical cleft between their brow. Approximately 15 years ago in 2381 their homeworld was destroyed by the Borg and about three-quarters of their population was lost. The survivors lived off-world in Lorillian colonies, ships or on other worlds. The two main Lorillian colonies have established their own unique self-governments since the destruction of their homeworld.

Their species have subsequently undergone massive social change with each colony developing its own culture and smaller groups integrating with other species. Over half their remaining population has abandoned their traditional beliefs and there has been a large increase in mental illness.

The Lorillians have an unusual aspect to their development in that up until the age of 4 they can only breathe methyl oxide and must be gradually weaned onto oxygen. Lorillians can also breathe methylacetylene.

Species Closeup: Menk

“Evolution is complicated.”

The Menk are a very peaceful humanoid species that evolved on the planet Valakis. Unlike most planets, the planet of Valakis evolved two sentient species – the Menks and the Valakians. For a long while the Menks were ruled by the Valakians as they were considered an inferior species.

In 2151 (ENT: Dear Doctor) it was discovered that Valakians were dying out due to a genetic illness. Dr Phlox had a choice to either give the Valakians a cure or to not interfere and allow the Menks an opportunity to become the dominant species on the planet. Dr Phlox chose the latter.

Species closeup: Zaldans

ay what you mean. I do not trust your sugary words.”

The Zaldans are a humanoid species with webbed hands. They are blunt and a simple human courtesy can cause great offense as they interpret such actions as phony. This can cause great difficulty in interactions with other species but they are a friendly and helpful people once this is taken in account. They are one of the few species to have entire ships crewed by the same species due to these difficulties.

Zaldans are naturally aggressive and physical competition and challenges have become an intricate part of their culture. They are generally muscular, tall and athletic and therefore typically excel at inter-species sports. The species has a good relationship with Klingons showing they are respected as being honorable.

The Zaldans have only appeared in a few Star Trek episodes and as a playable species there are lots of opportunities to expand upon their basic outline. Learn more about this species from their wiki page.

Species Closeup: Pahkwa-thanh

“Understanding how and why the physical form works the way it does is essential to understanding how to treat it.” -a Pahkwa-thanh proverb.

One of the newer members of the Federation family, the sole world of the Pahkwa-thanh, Duhpwa’thuv, is a lush world of swamps and thick foliage. Its appearance resembles a Triassic Earth. The same might be said for its inhabitants.

Despite their fearsome appearance, Pahkwa-thanh are generally one of the most benevolent, peaceful races in the Federation. They are exclusively carnivorous, and as a result, very few serve in Starfleet, as most prefer to remain on their homeworld to serve their unique physiological needs. Courtesy and respect are of paramount importance for the Pahkwa-thanh. The majority of Pahkwa’thanh enjoy hunting for live food, but restrain their consumption to lower life forms, as hunting intelligent beings would be considered “highly impolite”.

This mentality extends to a planetary focus towards medicine and humanitarian engineering. While they are currently labeled as “To be determined” by the Intelligent Lifeform Index, one is currently being played on the Starship Blackwell as a PNPC.

De nobis fabula narratur: The Magna Romans

In the year 2268, the USS Enterprise landed on an M-Class planet, 892-IV, in search of the SS Beagle, a missing survey vessel. The crew found a pre-warp, pre-atomic species with technology and a civilization closely matching 20th-century Terrans.

“An amazing example of Hodgkins’s law of Parallel Planet Development,” Captain James T. Kirk logged. “But on this Earth, Rome never fell. A world ruled by emperors who can trace their line back two thousand years to their own Julius and Augustus Caesars.”

At the time of first contact, Magna Roma, as it would later be referred to, was controlled by the Magna Roman Empire, a society of conspicuous consumption with heavily industrialized economy and a hierarchical system of rule that relied on a reformed slave system. Slavery had survived for millennia by giving slaves rights under the law such as the right to medicine and old-age pension. Holdovers from the worship of Roman gods made their way into contemporary products, like Mars toothpaste, Neptune bath salts or the Jupiter Eight model conventional internal combustion engine automobile.

Master Strategists: the Zakdorn

“In the game of military brinksmanship, individual physical prowess is less important than the perception of a species as a whole,” an operations officer aboard the Enterprise-D once explained of the Zakdorn. ”For over nine millennia potential foes have regarded the Zakdorns as having the greatest innately strategic minds in the galaxy.”

Hailing from Zakdorn in the Kador system of the Abin Zak Sector, the Zakdorn are an exceptionally cunning and strategically-minded race of humanoids. According to Federation star charts, their homeworld is located on the extreme edge of Federation space in the Beta Quadrant’s outer sectors.

Caitians: The cat-like species

Of all the species known to the Federation, one of the most interesting in appearance are the Caitians. Their looks are eye-catching, with feline characteristics, right down to a mane and tail. Their fur tones vary from black to tan with many colors in between.

Like tigers or lion from Earth, this species is known to be natural predators, and you’ll probably never meet a vegetarian. Thanks to replicators, members of Starfleet don’t hunt for food, but they do prefer raw meat.

With a lifespan topping-off around 115 years, they’re one of the longer-lived members of the Federation. While their species took longer than average to break the warp barrier, they soon encountered a number of other species. The Federation made the best impression, and in 2234 they became members.

Much like the cliche of house cats, Caitians have a sense of space around them, both in regards to their relationships and their need for personal space in their quarters. Too many individuals packed onto one ship can be detrimental to their health. As for relationships, they tend to keep things neutral in public, not feeling the need to openly expression how they feel about others. This does go both ways, though, for those they like and those they don’t.

A genetically engineered species close-Up: Benzite

Many species have mysterious histories, enriching their cultures and making each one more tantalizing than the last. Each one with an “origins” story or wild fable passed down through time. Some flourishing in facts, others blooming from myth. One such specie are the Benzite, a simple looking species with their blue skin and smooth appearance making them look striking similar to those not-Benzite. Their history is meshed with curiosity and survival.

Benzites are a result of genetic engineering and mutation. A people, the Benzite call the “Forebears”, left their incomplete work and offspring to cope with the unbreathable, methane and ammonia-rich, atmosphere. Evolution brought about more genetic engineering. Though, not just for survival of individuals but for reproduction and breathing of all. Breathing apparatuses were needed for Benzites on their world, just as much as it was for offworld movement.

There is still a great deal of mystery revolving their parent species. Tight lipped with their own people, outsiders did not receive information freely. Instead, through archeology sponsored by the Federation have we come to similar conclusion, they are the surviving members of a long forgotten species. Despite question of their origins, the Benzite Species have pressed onwards and upwards to the stars. In the 22nd century they invented their warp drives and soon after applied for citizenship with the Federation. Something that was questioned due to the nature of the Benzite’s creation.

The first Benzite to join StarFleet, an overly eager, young cadet named Morduck. His eagerness and tightly-wound, overachiever demeanor is something not isolated to him. It is a trait of all Benzites. Almost to a fault. Considered overly competitive and not naturally team players, instead focussed on personal achievement and progress to the death. They do not believe in a deity, but a point system based off of achievements in their lifetime.

A philosophy known as Andragov’s Doctrine, the doctrine provides a positive numerical score for personal achievement, and a negative score for failure. They receive praise for completion of their goals or public humiliation for failure. In the past, if scores became too far negative they were expected to commit a ritualistic suicide or except being exiled to Galmut Chi Panzor. Though in recent years, they have allowed those who “fail” a chance to redeem themselves before death.  Benzites devote their lives to hard work and obsess over achievement. As such they do not understand the concept of fun, or sense of humour.

This unique and engineered species has just as much to offer genetically as it does historically. The blue-blemished skin is incredibly similar per person, or geostructure. Geostructure is what they refer to as clans or family lines. Terrans thought they were something special with their opposable thumbs over the animal kingdom. Benzites take it to the next level with TWO opposable thumbs, one on each side of the palm and three fingers in between. Their blood, a combination of mercury and platinum, forms an orange liquid when oxidized. They have two catfish-like barbells protrude from the region above the upper lip, another extends from each side of the nasal lobe; the Benzites refer to these barbells as “whiskers”. And as most species breath in oxygen and exhale carbon dioxide, Benzites breath in heavy chlorinated air and exhale carbon trichloride.

The Species With Wings: Aurelian

There are a number of species who prove to be more difficult to write for on a Starfleet ship, whether it is due to what they breath, their ability to walk or their mode of communication. Yet in many cases, there are ways around those complications. Breathing apparatus, universal translator and leg brace and/or wheelchairs or even through a series of operations. Though the later tended to be still difficult to manage.

Let’s take a look one such species: the Aurelians. The only named one, within the community, is their ambassador to the Federation. They are a bipedal species, covered head-to-toe in various shades of yellow feathers given them the appearance of a bird-like people. Right down to their wings, which are awkward to maneuver throughout a standard Starfleet starship corridor. Despite the extreme case of look-alike between the avian species and birds, they have arms and legs much like that of standard humanoids, making working with any equipment simple. Just be sure to duck through doors with those wings!

Despite the number of similarities between Aurelians and your more common species, like Humans or Vulcans, there are a number of differences which make this species rather interesting. Everyone wishes to fly at some point in their life. These avian people have such capabilities, and though it is possible by all members, they are limited to how much time is spent in flight; the strain from their sheer size makes it difficult to go long distances, though gliding is still possible with ease.

Much of their history is passed-down orally, something they learn from an early age. It also is part of how they become full-fledged members of their family and flock. Not just their personal history but their world as a whole as well. One of their oldest customs is a tattooing, on their beaks, which gives them a identification of family and flock for all to see.

They have a fondness for the sciences and medicines, something that stems from their past. To find them in a militant position would be not only uniquely, but perhaps unwise. Their bone structure is weak, hollowed. And though their eyesight is strong their ears are weak. These qualities would be dangerous from someone trying to protect a group of officers or civilians. The sciences, however, tend to be just right to quench their curiosity. And their sense of community has shared all the knowledge they could amongst each other.

The species we created: Laudeans

If you’ve been around our community for a while, you’ve undoubtedly run into a few Laudeans – a species unique to UFOP: StarBase 118 Star Trek PBEM RPG, and one of the central players of the Duronis II Embassy simming installation.

The Laudeans were created in the early aughts, OOC, as the main protagonists of the Embassy sim. They’re a humanoid species and the only native sapient species on Til’ahn (also known as Luxis II or Duronis II). Laudeans feature three sexes – male, female, and lomale – and while, as with most humanoid species, the male provides a sperm and the female the egg and carries the child, the lomale is required to copulate with both the male and the female in order to provide essential gene sequences and enzymes that neither the female nor the male can synthesize naturally. Lomales comprise only 3% of the totally Laudean population.

The Laudean people have been at the center of a political struggle since First Contact, which caused a great deal of upheaval on their planet. The constitutional monarchy which dominated the planet’s governance was overthrown after First Contact, and was replaced with a democratic world government. Some of the monarchy was able to escape the planet and are now refugees, guests of Betazoid.

Back on Til’ahn, the Laudeans were courted by Romulans, Zalkonians, and the United Federation of Planets, all three of which maintained an embassy on the planet. The UFP embassy remains, and is home to our Duronis II Embassy sim.
