TRILL — The crew of USS Darwin-A took leave on Trill following their victory over Consortium leader Raikenoff in the Delta Quadrant.
DELTA QUADRANT, POUIYEOG REGION — The USS Darwin faced off against the Consortium vessel Vanquish in a showdown pitting Fleet Captain Renos against his arch-nemesis Raikenoff.
OUTPOST UNITY — With the crew pursuing various shore leave activities, they are all pulled back together to deal with Hallowe’en holograms threatening the crew.
RAIKENOFF’S FOLLY NEBULA — While studying a nebula, the USS Darwin discovered cosmozoans and a hidden Numiri installation and made first contact with a new species.
DYSON SPHERE, DELTA QUADRANT — With access to the interior of the Dyson Sphere previously impossible, the Darwin crew were suddenly granted access but only for 72 hours.
OUTPOST UNITY — The USS Darwin-A returned to Outpost Unity for shore leave and resupply, giving its crew a much needed break following a run of taxing missions.
Several of Darwin’s crew have experienced significant trauma in the past months, such that Starfleet assigned additional counselors to cope with increased demand.
Fleet Captain Renos, who despite nir considerable Starfleet achievements remains branded a criminal deviant on nir homeworld of J’naii, was kidnapped by deviant hunters hoping to collect the sizeable bounty on nir head. After nir return to Darwin, ne suffered an identity crisis as a result of the psychotectic treatment nir captors forced on nem.
Many crewmembers attempted to aid nir recovery. First Officer Varaan taught meditation techniques, Assistant Security Chief Logan related to nem on a personal level, and Diplomat Lyldra and Chief Engineer Brell offered their support as longtime, concerned friends.
Elsewhere, Mission Specialist Nicu Icavoc struggled to adapt to life as an amputee, having lost his right arm in a fire. Assistant CMO Isabel Pond and Cybernetics Specialist Merrick R’Ven began the search for options to help the Dokkaran, including creating a prosthetic device. In a fit of frustration, Icavoc attempted to beam a piece of artwork into the recycler, but Counselor Paul Scudder intervened, causing the messy painting supplies to materialize in the counseling suite just as Scudder was meeting his superior officer, Lead Counselor and Second Officer Didrik Stennes, for the first time.
On a lighter note, love is in the air as Chief Medical Officer Graeme Cook asked the love of his life, Diplomatic Trainee Lyna Namid, to be his boyfriend, while Pond and Helm Officer Randal Shayne decided to move into shared quarters together. At a well-attended retirement party for Chief Marquette, new and longtime crewmembers got the opportunity to meet and mingle, and Tactical Officer Emery Rhyn and Mission Specialist Nataniel Wilmer seemed to hit it off right away.
While some hearts have come together on Darwin, others have broken. Maxwell Traenor made the difficult decision to end his budding romance with Renos after Starfleet Command voiced concerns that his feelings for Renos clouded his judgment during his command of the previous mission. Sparing him a court-martial, Traenor was reassigned to another ship with zero notice, forcing Renos to scramble to replace him while still at the depths of his own personal crisis.
At a promotions and awards ceremony, the sombre mood lightened considerably as several officers began new chapters in their careers. Among those honored, Varaan was promoted to Commander and First Officer, Pond to Lieutenant and Assistant Chief Medical Officer, Brell to Lt. Commander and Chief Engineer, and Science Officer John Valdivia to Lt. Commander. Darwin’s crew enjoyed a lavish meal and a night of dancing, but the soiree was cut short by the call of duty. Doorways into the Dyson Sphere have opened, and Darwin must send six teams into the unknown to discover what secrets lie within.
POUIYEOG REGION — After repelling a Numiri attack on Outpost Unity, the USS Darwin-A have rescued Fleet Captain Renos from the clutches of a traitorous former crewmember.
With the USS Darwin (NCC-99312-A) effecting hasty repairs after a tense battle in the defense of Outpost Unity against the Numiri, the Darwin crew was ready to start their search for the missing commanding officer, Flt. Capt. Renos. Retrieving the stranded senior officers that had helped to thwart a terrorist attack by a Numiri agent in disguise, the Darwin rendezvoused with the USS Endeavour, where they received an influx of new officers, including Ensign Christopher Lambert, some much needed material for ongoing repairs, and an exciting tip for their search. A merchant vessel had made contact with the ship believed to have Renos aboard, and the Darwin’s cat and mouse QSD chase was able to be shortened drastically.
Upon intercepting the strange ship that departed weeks earlier from Outpost Unity with Renos board, the Darwin was met with a firefight as the ship attempted to flee. The small ship seemed outgunned and overpowered by the larger Horizon class vessel until the Darwin’s shields mysteriously dropped and entered a locked diagnostic mode, leaving the Darwin defenseless. The intercept had happened in a system with degrading binary neutron stars, dumping gamma radiation and gravitic waves throughout the system. Without shields, radiation poisoning was a serious concern, and the effects of the burgeoning black hole precluded the use of transporters and tractor beams to capture the ship and retrieve Renos.
“We are sitting in a binary star system that, given time will become a black hole. At the moment it is putting out intense radiation. With no shielding we are being bombarded with it with only Darwin’s hull to protect us. We will need to find a way to protect ourselves more fully or else we will not be in any position to help the captain,” remarked Lieutenant Merrick R’Ven at the time.
Without the use of transporters, first officer Lt. Cmdr. Maxwell Traenor ordered a retrieval team to attempt to locate Renos via force, using a shuttle to board the other ship. Led by Lt. Cmdr. Varaan, the team managed to breach the ship after the Darwin pummeled the other ship to the point of shield failure.
Meanwhile, on the other ship, the two deviant hunters who had kidnapped Renos and were trying to break nem under psychotectic therapy were at odds over their situation. Iy, the traitor who had been ingratiated nemself to the Darwin crew for the past year, had been responsible for the sabotage on the Darwin that had caused its shields to fail. Zorel, who mistrusted Iy’s true loyalties from the start, accused Iy of purposefully failing in disabling the Darwin to allow Renos to escape. With Zorel threatening to kill Renos rather than allow nem to escape the clutches of the J’naii government, Iy was forced to kill nir fellow deviant hunter to save Renos’s life.
Finding the ship sparsely manned, the rescue team discovered an emaciated, tortured, and incoherent Renos next to the corpse of a deviant hunter and fled the J’naii vessel with nem before it was bombarded with a lethal level of gamma radiation. Iy, unknowing of this event but unable to save nir ship from the effects of the radiation and gravitic waves, was doomed as nir ship was drawn into the binary star’s gravity well with no hope of escape. With Renos rescued and nir abductors beyond justice, the Darwin limped home to Outpost Unity with its crew dejected over the state of their commanding officer and the betrayal by one they had called their own.
