Join the Publicity Team and help us grow the fleet

If we want to launch new ships, we have to grow our fleet with new members. That’s why it’s so important that our community members participate in our publicity efforts.

Getting involved is easy only takes a few moments. The Publicity Team has a number of small tasks that, each month, can help grow our influence, spread the word about our group, and pique the interest of Star Trek writers around the net. From posting on Star Trek forums to gathering social media content, most of our tasks don’t require any particular expertise, and can be completed by anyone in 15-30 minutes. But if we don’t have enough people to help each month, our goals fall short and it’s hard to sustain recruiting levels to the point of replacing the folks who go on leave or retire from the group.

Help us grow our fleet by doing this one simple thing

The “Spring Slump” in recruiting hit us really late this year, and has had a strong impact on the fleet. As you may know, we closed the USS Excalibur-A a few weeks ago due to member attrition, and applications have really slowed.

Luckily, turning the tide just takes a little help from friends. If you have Facebook liking and sharing the post below can help it reach hundreds or thousands more people among your friends. Facebook prioritizes posts that are “popular,” which means they get a lot of likes and shares. So the more people that like and share the post, the more Facebook will show it to people.

Click here to open our Facebook post. Then click “Like” and after that, “Share.” Make sure to add a little note when you share it about how you’re a member, and how much you enjoy our group!

If you also have Twitter, you can retweet the post below, to help it be seen by more people:

Click here to open our Twitter post. Then click the “Retweet” button to share it with your followers.

These quick items will have a big impact on our recruiting efforts, because the absolute best way to bring in new members is through “word of mouth” advertising. It out-performs all of our other efforts by far.

So thanks for helping us grow our community!

What Do You Like and Who Can You Tell?

You’ve been with the fleet now for a few weeks, months or even years and you’re enjoying yourself hugely. You’re roleplaying with a like-minded group of individuals and you’re working on developing your character’s latest plot arc, or contributing to the ship’s current mission. You might be involved in any number of OOC groups, rising through the ranks towards the command chair, making wiki edits, creating graphics for people… there is a huge amount of activities that could make the list of your favourite things to do in the fleet, and every single member has one thing that they enjoy more than anything else, because that’s part of human nature!

So who can you tell?

Star Trek fans who exist in sci-fi vacuums do exist, but they’re not very common. Which of your friends like Star Trek? Which of your friends like roleplaying? Which of them are writers? Which of them needs a hobby? You talk to your friends about things you enjoy, so when will the fleet come up in conversation? If you tell them about that activity that made it to the top of your list of favourites then they will immediately be able to see and hear how passionate and enthusiastic you are about it. How? Because it will be written all over your face, or it will come out clearly in the way you write about it. Will that be enough to make them give it a try? Maybe… but there’s a nefarious trick you can use to hook them in. You know your friends and you know what they like, so the trick is to see if you can figure out what they would like best about the fleet, and then talk about that right after!

Does your friend like writing and consider themselves to be pretty great? Are they competitive? “Hey, there’s actually a bi-monthly writing challenge that you would probably like…” Odds are, they’ll want to know more! Do they love watching TV shows and always talk about the characters? “You get to interact with upwards of 10 other people on your ship, and you get time between missions to make plans about how they will evolve!” They’ll want to know more about that chance for character development and probably the missions, too!

Will they stick around with the fleet? Well… once you’ve done the initial job of pushing them in our direction, it’s our job to keep them interested and motivated. We’re confident we can do it. After all, think of it like this: wouldn’t it be cool if you could write with your friends?

Sowing the Seeds

There are enough potential members out there for us to double the number of ships in the fleet almost overnight — we just need to help them find us! It’s easy to contribute, doesn’t take a lot of time and converts directly into applications to the academy! It’s time to answer the call!

The Publicity Team has been working to keep the name of UFOP: StarBase 118 up in lights around the simming community and the internet as a whole, but we can never have enough members! We don’t ask for a huge time commitment, just 15 minutes a week, but imagine how you’d feel when those 15 minutes convert themselves into a member who applied because of something you did! There’s no feeling like it – you’re at the cutting edge of the group and one of the people responsible for sourcing its very lifeblood: new cadets.

Do you want to take a role in expanding our universe? Do you want new shipmates and a way to directly contribute to your progression in the fleet by involving yourself in an OOC group? Just submit your information below and you’ll be added to the team by Fleet Captain Diego Herrera.

That’s the Way, Ah-ha, Ah-ha…

It’s a new year and a new start for the recruitment drive for UFOP: Starbase 118! As we take our first steps into the brave new year, it’s time once again to let you guys know exactly how you can help us to get our name out as far and as wide as possible!

Are you on facebook? If so, did you know that UFOP: SB118 has its own facebook page? If you have your own non-character based page then it would be fantastic if you could drop on in and give us a like: https://www.facebook.com/ufopsb118

There’s something released through social media channels every day, but this month, a concentrated effort on facebook could really help us to take off. You can help us in three ways. Liking our posts is a fantastic way to increase the number of people who view what we write – that includes ship summaries, fleet events and also general articles about Star Trek, Sci Fi and Science. In turn, that could lead to friends of yours (or indeed friends of friends) liking our page, which spreads our sphere of influence ever wider! Even better, you can share what we post, which gives people a direct chance to take a look at the interesting article of the day.

The best possible way to get involved, though, is to post a comment! Your friends will be able to read that you did, but they will then have a chance to add their own views! If we’re talking about a little known piece of trivia from one of the trek films, or asking for your opinion on a recent scientific discovery, why not post up your viewpoint? The more discussion we get, the more the posts stay alive and the more people will see us chatting! That will tempt them to join in and give them a chance to interact with the members of the 118 fleet. We’ve said on countless occasions that you’re our best asset for publicity because you’re a fantastically welcoming bunch so let’s get out there and see how many people we can draft in! After all, once we pass a certain level of popularity on Facebook, each post we make will be seen by that many more people, so this is the kind of work where each mote of effort really contributes to the overall picture! Many hands make light work and every person counts, so see you on Facebook!

Publicity Team Update! How can you help?

Queues of eager cadets banging on access hatchways and docking ports and attempting to hijack transporter consoles to get themselves posted onto our group’s fleet of top quality ships… that’s the dream of the publicity team and we’re definitely attracting some attention from various different corners of the internet and real world as our ongoing campaigns continue to generate interest in the group. However – the golden rule with a publicity campaign is that you can never be enough in the public eye! We’ve recently expanded our regular monthly efforts to include the Star Trek.com and Star Trek Online forums, encouraging trek fans to come and join us by tempting them with mouth watering insights into the plots of our ships – which means that your character’s actions themselves could have a direct impact on hooking in a brand new cadet! Wouldn’t it be great if there was another way for you to help us raise our numbers and, in turn, create the opportunity to launch brand new ships, create promotion opportunities and help us build in popularity? Well… there is!

For this month’s mission possible, the Publicity Team is asking you for a very simple task that should take you no more than 15 minutes to complete. All you need to do is put together a 300 word (min.) article on a subject relating to ANY of the following tasks: Star Trek, Sci-Fi, Science, Roleplaying, Writing. Pick something that you find interesting, such as how to write for your favourite duty post or alien species, a recent scientific development or a cool way you’ve discovered to help describe your character’s surroundings from their own perspective. You name it – as long as it relates to one of those topics, it’s fair game! Once you’re done, just email it to diegoherrera118@yahoo.co.uk and your job is done! As part of our network there are a few other Star Trek and roleplaying blogs that are always looking for short articles to post up, so if we have a bank of them then that helps us to create stronger links with those groups while also getting our name out there to advertise!

If you’d like to join our team of intrepid volunteers then you can also mail the email address above – remember, we need you to keep making the magic happen!
