Do you have the gift of the gab? Do you enjoy discussing Star Trek with fellow fans? Do you enjoy introducing people to facets of Trek that you find interesting?
The answer to at least one of those is almost guaranteed to be “YES!” – in fact, as a member of our group, we’re willing to bet you have at least two out of three nailed. That’s why we’re offering you the chance to join the UFOP: Starbase 118 Podcast Team and become an ambassador for or group.
As a member of the team, you’ll be involved with assisting in hosting the podcast as a rotating guest host, and you’ll have the chance to record your very own regular segment. Segments and podcasts will be regularly posted to the fleet’s YouTube channel, where it can be accessed by swathes of eager Star Trek fans. Your content will help to attract new members to the group, spark discussion among those already in our ranks, and form a part of an all-new, all-exciting podcast relaunch!
So how do you take us up on our offer? Simple – all you need to do is send a message to Commander Chen with your idea for a regular segment! All you’ll need apart from that creative spark is a microphone, the ability to download and access Skype, and 15-20 minutes of spare time per month to record and submit your segment. We’re looking forward to hearing from you.
Over the past few weeks, I’ve been laying the groundwork for a new role that will help our myriad of taskforces to focus on the goals we set each year in our State of the Federation Address. This new role is the Taskforce Facilitator, the purpose of which is to help our taskforce leaders.
There are lots of teams that help to provide depth to our fleet and through the work done by their members, our experience is enriched. Each team has a different directive, pursued by the members of that specific team, but the results of their efforts ripple outwards and have an impact on the rest of the fleet regardless of how small that impact may seem. From our monthly fleet-wide chats, to our Training Team, and even our Graphics Team, it’s certain that our experience here at 118 would not be the same if it were not for the hard work of our team members.
But with so many taskforces, there are lots of things — like those goals we set every year — that can fall through the cracks when people get busy. The Taskforce Facilitator will work with team leaders to track membership, goals, and keep records so they are readily available to the EC, CC, and leaders looking to get a picture of where a team stands. By working in conjunction with the Promotion Coordinator, the Taskforce Facilitator will also help by finding appropriate leadership roles for up and coming command officers.
Often, we find that our time is limited and our goals seem so far away. To make things easier on our leaders throughout the fleet, it is hoped that the creation of this role will take some of the stress from those leaders so that they can refocus on their team’s goals with renewed fervor. With direct support (from me!), team leaders will have a better chance of attaining the goals they’ve set for themselves at the beginning of the year, and moving on to bigger things.

Guilds, within UFoP: StarBase 118, are a special type of taskforce that seek to bring together members of the group at large to gather, discuss, and exchange ideas on a central topic. Existing guilds include the Guild of Vulcans and the Lambda Alliance, and now the Guild of Uncommon Species has joined that short list.
The GUS is very new and is currently trying to find its feet — build up membership, encourage idea exchange, and plan activities. Ensign Aveunalliv, of the USS Avandar, has been influential in codifying the GUS, and hopes that the GUS “can become a very active, and important, guild in the fleet – after all, the Federation is made up of a lot more than just Humans and Vulcans. There are countless species, many of which we don’t really know about aside from that they exist because they were in the background on an episode of the show.”
The GUS hopes to provide new members with extra choices of species, too, and not just serve as a meeting place for existing members. “Many new players will likely choose something they are already familiar with, such as Trill or Betazoids, but I want to make sure they have a much wider selection to choose from. I know there is already quite a lot of races a player could choose to be, but assuming they randomly pick one from the ILI – somewhat like I did when I chose Caitian for my character – they will have what they need to make an informed decision about what race to play.”
