The 2019 Halloween Avatar Contest award winners are…

The pumpkins have been carved, the candy’s been purchased, the orange and purple light strings have been hung by the fire with care. Now all that’s left to do is announce who won this year’s Halloween Avatar Contest!

Just to reiterate how this works: We have one judge from each ship in the fleet review all the entrants, and rank each ship against the others on two metrics: Originality and Design. We add those two scores together and then multiply it by the crew’s participation in the contest – ships with fewer participants are marked down a certain percentage for each player who doesn’t participate. (We did discount players who had accessibility challenges.)

I’m very happy to report that six out of our nine installations had 100% participation, and another had 91% participation, so a great year for fleet-wide participation in the contest! Unfortunately for some of the crews that didn’t have full participation, that number did end up affecting their ranking. Keep that in mind for next year!

Without further ado, click here to see who won this year’s Halloween Avatar Contest, and congratulate the winners!

Our 9th Annual Halloween Avatar Contest is underway

Each year, we run a contest to see which crew can come up with the best avatar themes for the forums, like “Nightmare Before Christmas,” or “Mugshots,” or “Sesame Street.” A set of judges from every crew in the fleet determines the best based on originality and design.

This year’s 9th annual contest has already begun, so if you haven’t yet checked-in to your forum thread, be sure to get that doon soon!

Halloween Avatar Contest 2018: Winners!

Thanks to everyone who helped organize and facilitate their crew’s participation in this contest. This year all eight of our ships and bases participated. Here’s our list of themes:

Participation was even higher than last year, with five ships at 100% and all other ships at 85% or higher!

There were eight judges this year, all from our community. Each ship and base sent one judge who was not the Commanding Officer. They were each required to rank the entrants in two categories: originality and design quality. None of the judges could score their own ship in the first position for either category. Then, we multiplied those scores against participation of each ship to come up with a final number.

So who won? (Click the “read more” button to see!)

My favorite time of the year is here: Our annual Halloween Avatar Contest!

Here’s the quick-and-spooky: Each crew chooses a theme – like “Nightmare Before Christmas,” or “Mugshots,” or “Sesame Street” – then, each person on the crew is assigned a character and changes their avatar to an image of that character. A set of judges from every crew in the fleet determines the best based on originality and design.

Don your Halloween avatar before the contest closes this weekend

Our yearly Halloween Avatar Contest is off to a scary start, with five crews already well on their way to full participation with themes like Norse gods, Westworld and Game of Thrones characters, and a tarot deck!

We’re entering the home stretch of the opt-in portion of this contest, with our deadline of Sunday, October 22 approaching quickly. Anyone who hasn’t donned their costume avatar by then won’t be eligible to count toward their crew’s participation score.

Head to the forums now to get your avatar on and check-in to your ship’s thread. Click here now.

If you’re not sure how to change your avatar, check out the “Rules & Announcements” thread in the forum linked-to above – it has a tutorial that explains with screenshots how to make it happen. And, of course, other members of your crew are always happy to help!

Here are the Halloween Avatar Contest 2016 winners

Happy Halloween everyone! I’m so happy to announce that every ship entered! And there was some amazing work done – every year the entries get better and better. Thanks to everyone who participated, and especially to those who helped get their crews to select a theme and those who helped design the avatars. Read on to find out who won…

THIS YEAR’S JUDGES
There were three judges, the first of which was yours truly.

The other two judges were guests, and we thank them for participating:

THE SCORING
The judges reviewed all the avatars in the check-in threads. They ranked all the participants in two categories from one to eight, with one being the lowest score and eight the highest. The two categories were Originality and Design. The scores in each category were then added together and multiplied by the participation score. (So if 80% of the crew participated, then your scores were multiplied by 80%.)

For “best in show,” each judge nominated three of their favorite avatars. The person with the most nominations won. (One person received two nominations, in this case. If there hadn’t been more than one nom, I would have chosen the winner myself.)

BEST IN SHOW
With two nominations out of the nine total made, congratulations to Lt. JG Savan of Duronis II Embassy, who had not only a great avatar, but also a funny quote

RUNNERS-UP
Setting aside the participation score just for a moment, we had a tie for second place in originality: Darwin and Za. Congratulations to them for the very unique themes.

Darwin was also second place in the design category, just one point shy of the winner. The fun and clean designs were a big hit.

To that end, Darwin’s the clear runners-up. Top two in the last two years – not bad!

GRAND PRIZE WINNERS
And now to our overall winners. This team won all categories in the raw scores AND had 100% participation, beating Darwin by two points overall. Congratulations StarBase 118 Ops with their Steampunk crew!

The great theme coupled with the beautiful avatars stole the show. Way to go Ops!

THE PRIZES
Unfortunately we don’t have a “best in show” badge, but we’ll get one designed 🙂

Darwin’s primates receive runners-up badges. Our winners, SB118 Ops Steampunk crew, receive winning team badges. These are available on our badges wiki page.

Thanks again to everyone for participating. Please congratulate the winners and runners-up in our discussion thread.

Oh joy! The presents are wrapped, the tinsel is hung on the tree, and good cheer are everywhere. Wait, no! I mean… It’s time for our Annual Halloween Avatar Contest!

Here’s the quick-and-bloody: Each crew chooses a theme – like “Nightmare Before Christmas,” or “Mugshots,” or “Sesame Street” – then, each person on the crew is assigned a character and changes their avatar to an image of that character. A set of impartial judges votes to determine the best!

Halloween Avatar Costume Contest IV

On Halloween, all the children in the U.S., at least those with the cool parents, go out to the surrounding homes to extort as much candy as they can from their neighbors in a sick and twisted protection racket that would get adults tossed in jail, foreshadowing the sick and twisted way that their cute tummies will feel in the morning (namely sick and twisted, not to mention distended and bloated!).

And each year on our forums, we do our best to save our members from these sorts of holiday hoodlums while still allowing them to enjoy the Halloween fun! For a fourth year in a row, the forums administration group is once again sponsoring our yearly Avatar Costume Contest.

Entrants will be judged on a group basis by ship, based on the ship’s theme originality and avatar quality, as well as the level of the crew’s participation. Winners will get a banner for their ship site as well as bragging rights for the next year! Judge’s Choice awards will be given, as well as, new for this year, a special individual best of show award.

To join in the fun, and for more information about how to set up your ship’s entry into the contest, head to the forums!

Third Annual Halloween Avatar Contest winners

The results are in and the judges have spoken in the Third Annual Halloween Avatar Contest on the StarBase118 forums! More than half of our ships participated in the contest and averaged higher percent participation of their crews across the board over last year.

Many thanks to FltCapt. Mar, who facilitated this year’s competition, and Chas Hammer of the Simming Encyclopedia alongside Alex Solvay of Blue Dwarf who both judged this year’s competition.

There are two main components of the scoring: theme originality and image quality. Crew participation then factors in proportionally on the score.

For theme originality, the USS Mercury came in first with the monstrous “Mercury Street,” followed by the Knights of the USS Excalibur.

For image quality, the USS Excalibur took top billing, followed by the USS Apollo’s Nintendo characters.

Excalibur flag, smallAnd now for our final scores. In second place, the USS Mercury with a score of 47.84/60! And our winner … simulated drum-roll, please …

The crew of the USS Excalibur, with a score of 55/60!

Many thanks to all that participated! The winning and second place crews will receive a forum badge in the coming days.
