Lower Decks: Lieutenant JG Nathan Richards, Amity Outpost

Lower Decks: Lieutenant JG Nathan Richards, Amity Outpost

We’re here with another interview with a newer member of our community. The title of this column is “Lower Decks,” hearkening back to the Star Trek: The Next Generation episode titled “Lower Decks,” in which junior officers aboard the Enterprise-D speculate on the reasons for recent unusual actions taken by the command crew near the Cardassian border.

This month’s interview is with the writer behind Lieutenant JG Nathan Richards playing a male human Engineering Officer assigned to Amity Outpost.

DeVeau: Tell us a little about the writer behind the character — where in the world do you hail from?  Anything you’d like to share!

Richards: Of course! My name is Travis, and I am from the United States. Born in California, raised in Idaho where I have lived pretty much my entire life!

What was your introduction to Science Fiction in general and Star Trek specifically?

My introduction to Sci-Fi actually began with watching TNG with my dad growing up, and subsequently just about every series of Star Trek after that. I fell in love with the universe and the technology and have been a huge fan ever since.

What is your experience with roleplaying?

I’ve been part of two different PBEM RPGs over the years, and have been with SB118 for going on 3 years now. I started out in a smaller community that unfortunately died off after a year or so before stumbling upon SB118 and joining up.

What brought you to SB118?

Seeing how well built and maintained the community is, between the forums and the Wiki itself, really piqued my interest. I wanted to be a part of a big and active community, and I definitely found it in SB118..

Why did you choose this specific character and duty post?

I have always been fascinated by the technology and inner working of the Star Trek Universe and being an Engineer kind of seemed to be a perfect fit for my interests and expertise. As for why I picked a human character, my first character with SB118 was a Vulcan, and while playing a Vulcan in itself is an exciting and awesome experience, once I was able to return and rejoin the community, I felt that having a human character would be a bit more fulfilling and provide a greater level of entertainment that fit with my style of writing.

Where do you see your character five years from now?

5 years from now I would love to see Nathan as possible the Chief Engineer either aboard Amity or another Starship within the Fleet. I don’t necessarily see him pursuing the Captain’s chair at any point, but things could change!

Thanks for your time, Lieutenant JG Richards!
