A new year rings in new opportunities and new challenges for Starbase 118 Ops

STARBASE 118 OPS — The crew of Ops rang out the old and rang in the new with awards, but found themselves faced with an unexpected challenge in the form of Romulans.

An extended shore leave gave the crew of Ops an opportunity to wind down after an unexpected mission on Bajor. Officers took the opportunity not only to relax but to hone and increase their skills. But on the heels of the celebrations, the crew found themselves faced with the reality that the galaxy out there still turns, and enemies keep lurking around the corner.

After leaving the awards ceremony, someone attempted to transport Commodore Sal Taybrim, an act that could kill him due to a neurological condition that had developed from a past accident.

“Commodore Taybrim is doing all right, but his condition needs to be rectified sooner rather than later,” Lieutenant Commander Alora DeVeau, First Officer of Ops, commented. “Rather than wait any longer, he will depart for Betazed so specialists can take care of this issue immediately.”

“I do not make this decision lightly, but I trust my crew to prepare in my absence,” Taybrim commented when asked about the procedure. “I will not be a good host if I am unwell, so I must take every effort to be at my best.”

With the crew prepared for his absence, no one was prepared for what was to come. Talks between the Romulan Free State (formerly the Romulan Empire) and the Romulan Republic were scheduled a month early, but the question remained – is Ops ready? “We are excited to be a part of these talks,” Lieutenant Aine Sherlock, Chief of Security, reassured. “Every precaution has been taken to make sure things go as smoothly as possible.”

Visiting the Starbase, Colonel Wes Greaves, First Officer of the USS Oumuamua (NCC-81226), was on hand to offer his assistance. “Honestly, it’s nice to help out,” the marine commented when asked about his role. “I wasn’t exactly looking forward to being a tourist on the station, so any excuse to get to work is one I’m thrilled to take.”

The arrival of the Romulan delegates went smoothly, but there are rumours of threats against both factions. “We have survived the destruction of our homeworld. What greater threat can there be?” commented R’Val, Ambassador of the Romulan Republic, when asked if she had any concerns. “Not to mention the threats we have faced from both outside forces, as well as internal. We have always survived and this time will be no different. We are Romulan.”

With Taybrim absent, DeVeau has stepped up as acting commanding officer with Lieutenant Trovek Arys as acting First Officer. After several hours behind closed doors, the delegations took a break, but no one knows if the talks will prove fruitful. More on this as it develops.
