Spring has definitely sprung upon us all and we hope everyone gets a chance to enjoy it. As you do, we’ll make sure you don’t miss anything here, at Starbase 118.
In this edition of ‘The Lower Decks’, we have a sit-down with the newly promoted Lieutenant JG Maxwell Traenor from the USS Apollo. The writer behind the character is a lifelong fan of both Trek and the Sci-Fi genre. What started at first as self-described merciless mocking of TOS as a kid morphed into a lifelong love that he maintains today even after the shows have stopped airing. “Imagine two young boys watching syndicated reruns, carrying on their best (worst) MST3K-style commentary in front of the TV screen. Drove our parents nuts! Yet, by the time TNG came out, that good-natured derision had shifted into unabashed passion, and I have found it to be my favorite sci-fi universe ever since,” says Jason, the writer behind the mask of Traenor.
And that passion, coupled by a simple web search, brought him to the doorstep of Starbase 118. He claims that the organization behind the group drew him in, while the Academy and mentoring that we offer aboard our ships got him involved quickly. He’s got experience too. Of this, he says, “I have been involved with several IRC and PBEM Star Trek roleplays through the years, and not a one held a candle to the level of support and encouragement that SB:118 provides from the moment you send in your initial application.”
Of course not everyone draws 100% of their inspiration from Star Trek, and Jason is no different.
It really seems like the year is flying by. Here we are, already into the third month of 2015. Aside from the impending spring season, which some of us are looking forward to with great anticipation, it seems like we could really handle a bit of a slowdown. Of course, short of time travel, that’s impossible, but we can bring you some highlights of some of the awesome stuff going on around the Starbase 118 forums!

Awards are an integral part of the Starbase 118 experience. While we work hard to sim and weave a story that brings our imagination to life, acknowledgement for tackling some of the more difficult aspects of story building, or getting recognized for contributions that help our community grow are something everyone looks forward to.
And now, it’s easier than ever to make sure that you and your characters can shine by sharing the ribbons and awards you’ve earned!
Whether you’ve earned an OOC award or your character has gained a new Service Ribbon, players now have options on how to display their ribbons. While the ribbon ‘rack’ for character sidebars has been around for some time, our Chief of Wiki Operations has devised a new way to show off OOC awards on your user page.
By simply copying and pasting some specialized code, players can create a professional looking ‘case’ for their ribbons and awards. Complete with a nice wooden finish, the case allows you the ability to include the image of the award, the name of the award, the year that it was awarded along with the ship you were assigned to when the award was received, and the text of the citation that often accompanies both IC and OOC awards.
There are even multiple ways to implement this new addition to your user page or character page as well, including simplistic formatting, as well as something more descriptive using wiki markup code. Like many aspects of our wiki, the case that you create can be as simple or as elaborate as you desire! With a finish to match the beauty of our award ribbons themselves, this is another great way to show your amazing contribution to the 118 fleet.
Complete instructions on how to implement this special code are located here. And remember, if you run into any trouble, don’t hesitate to ask questions. Our Chief of Wiki Operations welcomes them here.
It’s a brand new year, which means that you have plenty of time to get into all of the excitement that can be found on the Starbase 118 forums. Whether you are a long-time member, or a brand new one, there’s tons of stuff for you to see and do on the forums this month and every month. Here are just a few of the most lively threads to be a part of in January.

“Fear the change. It must be stopped.” – a Zalkonian expression.
One of the smaller stellar empires, controlling a number of colonies and worlds in less than a full sector of space, the Zalkonians maintain a well-defended border. While not quite isolationists, they do tend to distrust all other species and have no interest in universal politics. That said, they will go to extreme lengths to hunt down and exterminate any of their citizens they deem to be criminals, especially those undergoing “the change.”
This change is the next step in their evolutionary process, but has sparked such a radical and universal – almost all-consuming fear to the point that all rationality seems to have been tossed aside. As a result they will betray children, spouses, parents and friends to their draconian style government if they suspect that such a person is undergoing the change.
This species is considered restricted for play, but has played a strong role in our Duronis II Embassy, where this species was at one time seeking to become the protectorate of the Laudeans.
Learn more about this species from their wiki page!
“The awareness of our own strength makes us modest.” –a Zalinian expression.
Governed as a monarchy, backed by a thin layer of old noble families, with the men usually going bare chested and the women wearing wrap-around dresses. They have just achieved warp technology and are fairly new to the universe around them. So far they have had limited contact with most other species but have established regular if sporadic contact with the Laudean people of Duronis II.
A complex mix of barbaric and sophistication, this species benefits from advanced technology in a primitive social setting, which is very rare. They are nonetheless a healthy, active people who are emotional, proud and still slightly ill-at-ease around other species.
Zalinians are a StarBase 118-original species, created by the crew of the Duronis II Embassy. This species is not playable by members, and is in the Forbidden category due to their telekinetic abilities.
Learn more about this species on our wiki page!
