Sun, sand, and scientific expeditions as the USS Artemis takes shore leave on Risa

RISA — After a tense diplomatic mission, the crew of the USS Artemis descended on Risa for a well-deserved break—only to find that trouble had followed them.

The USS Artemis, NCC-80221-A, entered orbit of Risa to grant its crew a much-needed period of shore leave. While many officers embraced the leisure opportunities offered by the pleasure planet, others found ways to balance relaxation with scientific curiosity.

Lt. Vailani Zoyara and Lt. Gila Sadar visited Risa’s famous Temtibi Lagoon to study the region’s unique bioluminescent algae, collecting samples while enjoying the natural beauty. Aboard the Artemis, operations continued at a reduced pace. Newly assigned Ens. Tho’Bi made a strong first impression by tackling engineering backlogs with notable enthusiasm, while medical officer Lt. JG Syrex oversaw a flight certification evaluation for Lt. JG Ollie Bergmen, ensuring the Operations officer was cleared for flight duty.

The tranquility of shore leave, however, was short-lived. A small science team—led by Lt. Sadar and comprising Lt. Vailani, Lt. Vitor Silveira, Ens. Imril, and Lt. Kyle Morgan—departed for the Laoi system to field-test a new long-range sensor suite. The targeted star, known for emitting a peculiar type of radiation, offered a promising site for experimental data collection. But before research could begin, the team received a distress call from a Federation colony on Laoi III.

Upon arrival, the team discovered that recent subterranean construction had unearthed the wreckage of a Jem’Hadar attack ship—an unsettling relic from the Dominion War.

“Not a Dominion ship—a Dominion wreck,” clarified Colony Administrator Bim Pend, visibly frustrated. “We unearthed it when we were expanding the treatment plant. And before you all start complaining about unauthorized expansion of a Federation facility, we only started doing it ‘cause Starfleet hasn’t bothered sending engineers since we submitted our application years ago.”

The derelict vessel lay buried beneath a populated district of the colony, raising safety concerns and causing interference with the colony’s computer systems. Efforts are currently underway to assess the structural stability of the site and determine the best course of action to neutralize any remaining threat posed by the aging warship.

Elsewhere, leadership aboard the Artemis saw a key change as LtCmdr. Talos Dakora returned from a temporary assignment to resume his role as First Officer.

The discovery of the Dominion vessel has cast a shadow over what was meant to be a period of respite for the Artemis crew—reminding all involved that echoes of the past can surface in the most unexpected places. For the rest of the crew, shore leave continues—for now. They’d do well to enjoy the calm while it lasts, as the Artemis is scheduled to resume patrols along the Borderlands in the coming weeks.
