DEEP SPACE 33, ALPHA ISLES — Surprise and speculation roiled the compartments and passageways of Deep Space 33 as the USS Khitomer failed to return to its place on the front line after an extended shoreleave in the Sol Sector.
The Khitomer was recalled from the line for thorough repair and refit after two significant engagements with Lattice Alliance forces in the Alpha Isles. It was widely believed that the ship would host an array of cutting edge technologies which could turn the tide on Lattice advances.
But as the weeks ticked on, it became clear that the Khitomer was not returning. Indeed, after an extended shoreleave on Earth that saw crew variously awarded, promoted, and wedded the Khitomer was, per official records, reassigned to patrol core worlds. In its place, the USS Renown and Lowell have appeared. And though the line is bolstered, voices speak openly of a yearning for a “game-changer.” Perhaps owing to this yearning, rumors abound DS33.
“I’ve heard that they’re chauffering some fancy pants Admiral on a tour of the quadrant,” reported Petty Officer Chennit Astrid. “Cushy gig if you can get it.”
A range of competing theories spread through the station like wildfire, each more tantalizing than the last. Some supposed that the ship was actually behind enemy lines, engaged in sabotage on Lattice supply lines. Others suggested that the Khitomer was caught up in a last ditch effort to end the war in a single day through unsanctioned time travel.
“I think the wildest one I’ve heard,” said Lt. Commander Dukul Nibar, “is that they’re really coming, just late. That they’re out in some remote nebula, performing secret equipment tests. In my experience, it’s best not to overthink these things. Starfleet will do what they will do, and we’ll do what we have to.”
