A new director has been named for the third installment of the new Star Trek franchise: Justin Lin.
Who is Justin Lin you may ask? According toWikipedia, Justin Lin “is a Taiwanese-born American film director whose films have grossed $2 billion worldwide. He is best known for his work on Better Luck Tomorrow, The Fast and the Furious franchise and the television show Community.”
But does that mean we now bid adieu to J.J. Abrams? Well no. J.J. will stay on as producer of the next film. But according to IMBD, Robert Orci will not be remaining as a writer.
Others who were in contention for the position of director include Rupert Wyatt, whose credits include Rise of the Planet of the Apes, and the new remake The Gambler with Mark Wahlberg for Paramount. Morten Tyldum, who is credited with the Oscar bait film The Imitation Game, Safe House director Daniel Espinosa, who has wrapped Child 44 with Tom Hardy, and Duncan Jones, the Source Code director.
None of the above got the nod, and so the third chapter of the new Star Trek was handed over to Mr. Lin. The movie is due to be released on the 50th anniversary of Star Trek, in 2016.
