Taskforce in Focus – The Newsies Team
The Newsies Team is tasked with updating the community news on a regular basis. Today we meet with the Federation News Service Facilitator, Commander Alora DeVeau, so we can learn more about this important part of our community!
Marsh: Thank you for joining us. Can you please start by giving us a short overview on the Newsies Team and how it supports our StarBase 118 community?
DeVeau: Certainly! As you know, we have two teams that focus on News – ours, and the Federation News Service. The Newsies focuses on OOC reports, interviews, announcements, that sort of thing. This helps us get to know others in the fleet from various ships, allows us to glean insight from those in leadership positions, and celebrate the milestones of our various members. Not only does this benefit our group internally, but it helps keep SB118 visible to the world at large.
What is your favorite thing about working on this taskforce?
My favourite thing is getting to know people across the fleet. I love interviews, I love talking with people, and I love learning about them. Every interview we do allows us a glimpse into someone else’s life or their personality. I love it when I see connections, either things that we both share in common, or tidbits that catch my attention and make me want to learn more. While we never ask for real names, it’s a joy to get to know someone a little bit better, and I feel it helps SB118 feel like more than just a game, but a community.
Who can join this taskforce?
Anyone! And I do mean anyone, including our Ensigns. If you have an interest in conducting interviews or crafting other OOC news articles (for instance, our 2401 Fleet Census and Survey) you are welcome to apply! We only ask that you have at least one full mission under your belt, but other wise, anyone interested is encouraged to inquire!
How would a new member join this taskforce?
It’s easy! Just talk with your commanding officer, or feel free to message either myself on (Aiko Heiwa) or my co-facilitator, Gogigobo Fairhug (MisterFairhug) on Discord! We’ll be happy to have you join us. 🙂
What is the most fun thing about working on this taskforce?
Honestly, seeing the diversity here in our group. We have so many people from so many different backgrounds. We have members in the Northern Hemisphere and Southern Hemisphere! We have people who write in English, but their native language is something else entirely (which is astounding to me!). We have people who are engineers, work in the service industry, have written books and gotten the published, or are stay at home parents. Yet all of us have an interest in Star Trek and want to carve out our own little stories while enjoying the randomness that involving others brings. We’re all very different, and yet we all have a thread that connects us together – and that, to me, is an amazing thing.
