Whether you are a long-time member, or a brand new one, there’s tons of stuff for you to see and do on the forums this month and every month. Here are just a few of the most lively threads to be a part of in January.
If there’s one thing that brings us all together, it’s Star Trek. After all, everything we do is based heavily in the realm of Trek. Now we can discuss our collective love for all things Trek in the new Trek forums: http://forums.starbase118.net/index.php/forum/215-star-trek/
We’ve relaunched Starbase 118 Ops! The namesake of our entire Fleet, the station has been unmanned for too long. The Starbase 118 History Team is looking for volunteers! With a community that is now two decades old, there is a lot of history behind what we see today. As a Fleet, we like to preserve this history, but we can’t do that without your help! Head on over to the History Team threads and join the fun in keeping our history alive: http://forums.starbase118.net/index.php/topic/10434-community-history-team-needs-you/
And of course we’re always getting new members and seeing new faces. Whether the newest Ensigns sim on your ship or not, be sure to stop by and welcome them to the Fleet in our special ‘Welcome’ thread: http://forums.starbase118.net/index.php/topic/6645-welcome-thread
As you can see, we’ve really kicked the new year off right. Be sure to visit the forums to see what fun you can find today!
On Halloween, all the children in the U.S., at least those with the cool parents, go out to the surrounding homes to extort as much candy as they can from their neighbors in a sick and twisted protection racket that would get adults tossed in jail, foreshadowing the sick and twisted way that their cute tummies will feel in the morning (namely sick and twisted, not to mention distended and bloated!).
And each year on our forums, we do our best to save our members from these sorts of holiday hoodlums while still allowing them to enjoy the Halloween fun! For a fourth year in a row, the forums administration group is once again sponsoring our yearly Avatar Costume Contest.
Entrants will be judged on a group basis by ship, based on the ship’s theme originality and avatar quality, as well as the level of the crew’s participation. Winners will get a banner for their ship site as well as bragging rights for the next year! Judge’s Choice awards will be given, as well as, new for this year, a special individual best of show award.
To join in the fun, and for more information about how to set up your ship’s entry into the contest, head to the forums!

Welcome to the beginning of the end of the 2012 Halloween Avatar Contest! This marks the second anniversary of the event on the UFOP:118 forums, and competition has been stiff as the graphics masters and ship cheerleaders across the fleet test their mettle. This time around, almost every ship has elected to participate with the following wonderful and creative themes: USS Apollo — the crew (and various and sundry associates) of Firefly; USS Avandar — characters from The Wizard of Oz; Embassy — the Duronis II zoo; USS Mercury — horrible mugshots; Starbase 118 Ops — black & white movie stars; USS Tiger — Star Wars characters. Check out the entries now, as they’ll only remain until the end of All Saints’ Day (November 1st). Who will win? Stay tuned!

As the summer blockbuster approaches, it’s a great idea to log onto the forums and connect with officers from other ships as well as those from your own. Be sure to take a moment to check out what’s going throughout the month of August; you’ll not only learn something about other members, but you’ll be helping to build the wonderful community that our Fleet is so well known for.
Writing challenges are usually designed under the premise of being… well, challenging. As an Ensign, or as Commander Kells has shown us – a cadet, it may be more challenging than one might think at first. Knowing the ins and outs of the process and how the challenge works can be the key to getting started. LTJG Vid-Lotilija of the USS Apollo has compiled just the article for any prospective Challenge candidate. Take it away Lieutenant!
With the end of the year upon us, things are getting more and more hectic in both our online world and our real lives. The holidays are quickly approaching and that means the annual awards ceremony is as well! With seventeen years already behind the Starbase 118 RPG as it is, it is exciting to see that we are still going strong. We have our community to thank for this; a community that comes together on the SB118 forums. Without any end to the things you can talk about and groups that you can join, the forums can be a great place to hang out when you have a few extra minutes this winter.
Since time is short, knowing some of the best places to look can help us quickly locate the fun this month:
In October, we held the first annual Halloween avatar contest for the whole fleet. Each ship chose a theme and created avatars based on that theme. The winners will be announced soon, but for now, take a look at the rules and then check each of the ship forums for the entries: https://www.starbase118.net/forums/index.php?/topic/6402-halloween-avatar-contest/
Don’t forget to vote in the end of the year vote off for the top sims contest. The winner will claim the title for all of 2011. Read the submissions and then cast your vote: https://www.starbase118.net/forums/index.php?/forum/283-top-sims-contest/
Sometimes, it can be helpful to connect with others who also serve in the duty post that you do. Check out the duty post forums to see what other officers playing similar roles to your own are doing: https://www.starbase118.net/forums/index.php?/forum/52-duty-posts/
