Poll of the Week: Once More, With Feeling

The Star Trek franchise is a living thing. Shows have come and gone over the years and each incarnation has added to the rich flavor of our favorite sandbox universe.

When a show completes its original run, there are always mixed feelings – a sense of completeness, sadness, nostalgia. Once we’ve worked our way through the stages of grief and hit acceptance, we move on with our lives. We have little choice to do otherwise.

But what if…

The trend has been up-ticking in recent years where studio executives will bring back popular shows for additional episodes – with some successes and some spectacular failures. True, there has been some distance between some of our favorite shows and the present day. Actors have moved on, aged, and we have lost some along the way. Some storylines have not aged well and may not work in the current social environment.

So, let’s change the rules!

Imagine a timeline where a Star Trek show from the past got one extra season. Which series is the lucky one to get another chance to wow us?

Would you tune in to see Kirk and Spock seek out new life and civilizations during their five-year mission? What about seeing more of the continuing mission with Picard in the center chair of the Enterprise-D? Do you want to see what Kira and the gang are up to on DS9 as they recover from the Dominion War? Should there have been an extra season nestled in among the others that provides more details on Voyager’s return home? Did Enterprise end before its time? Maybe you feel that all the series ended just where they should!

Take our poll and extra credit to anyone who provides details in the comments on which storylines they want to see from the bonus season!

If you could have one more season of Star Trek from a completed show, which one would you want most?

Task Force In Focus: Community History Team

The Community History Team, also known as History Team, is an archival team that helps organize efforts to keep the history of the group together in one central place (such as on the Ship Histories, crew history pages, current crew manifests, etc.) and harness the enthusiasm of history buffs who have time on their hands.  Today we meet with the History Team’s Facilitator Lieutenant Commander Addison MacKenzie so we can learn more about this important part of our community!

DeVeau: Thank you for joining us!  Would you please start by giving us a short overview on the History Team and how it supports our StarBase 118 community?

MacKenzie: The Community History Team is actually pretty cool because not only are we responsible for keeping records of things that are currently happening in the fleet, but we’re also responsible for digging into the archives to piece together things most of the community hasn’t seen for a long time!

We have a wide variety of tasks, and I’ll just mention some of the main ones here:

  1. Reconstructing crew manifests and histories.
  2. Assisting COs of current ships to maintain their crew histories
  3. Digging back through the archives to log  badge and award recipients
  4. Maintaining a “This Month in History” segment every month where we highlight an interesting aspect from the fleet’s history.

We do quite a bit more, but those are some of the highlights.

What is your favorite thing about working on this task force?

We have quite a variety of projects, so for example,  if you’re someone who works well in a group, we have tasks that need a high degree of collaboration. Likewise, if you’re someone who works better by yourself and prefers to work at your own pace, we have tasks that fit that bill, too.

Who can join this task force?

Absolutely anyone, Ensign and above.

How would a new member join this task force?

To join, interested members may either DM me on Discord, post in the #history room on Discord, or let their CO know – they’ll be able to connect us..

What is the most fun thing about working on this task force?

My answer isn’t going to be obvious or conventional, but hear me out… One of my favorite things to work on are the ship history reconstructions. Because this fleet has been around for so long, you can imagine that we’ve run quite a few ships over our history. There’s something very fun about getting to go back to reconstruct the entire record of a ship’s run – getting to see who participated that has since left the fleet, and who is still around. And, I have to say, I’m not quick when I work on projects like these because I often get drawn into reading old posts by current members  ::cough:: Captain Rahman ::cough:: – it’s fascinating to me to read posts by writers/characters early in their careers.

Thank you so much for your insights on the History Team!

Applications and Academy Graduates: March 2021

Every month, the Academy staff works to compile the statistics about our recruiting and training for the fleet’s informational purposes. Let’s take a look at how we did as a fleet in March.

This first graph depicts the number of applications that the fleet has received each month this year. The month of March saw six applications, down from February’s nine applications.

The following chart shows how our new members found us, according to their application:

This final graph shows how many people graduated from the Academy during the month of March. The fleet saw six new graduates during the month, increasing this year’s graduate percentage from 53% to 65%. This is down from the overall graduation rate of 71% in 2020. However, the annual graduation rate continued to steadily increase since January and is highly likely to shift further as we get deeper into 2021. It should be noted that two cadets who applied in February didn’t complete their training until March and one of the cadets who completed an application this month didn’t conclude their training class until April.

These new recruits are the lifeblood of our community. Without them, it becomes difficult to keep our ships fully crewed and even more difficult to grow the fleet. If you’d like to help us recruit more members and grow our fleet, you can join the Publicity Team using this form.
