Suspension of Disbelief

Dukat in "disbelief"

Any fiction series, but especially any Science Fiction (like Star Trek) or fantasy series, require some willing suspension of disbelief from it’s readers, viewers, etc. That is, some things that look impossible, and are barely explained, but we have to assume they happen in the universe. We accept that to follow the series.

In Star Trek, we usually have to accept some science principles that seem impossible, or engineering apparels that defy physics. Some of them, however, look plausible. Ok, we don’t have the technology. But it’s several centuries in the future, they might have invented it. We can even accept the Technobabble (we already talked about it here) that leads it to them.

The (Image) Collective: Assimilate Yourself into the Realm of StarBase 118!

By using photo manipulation, we are able to put the faces of our characters into Starfleet uniforms in order to make our fantasy world that much more realistic. Now, those members of the fleet who wish to join have a place to share their skills and get input and help from other members who also enjoy creating photos for their characters and ships.

The (Image) Collective is a new team that debuts this month. The goal of the team will be to provide images for any member of the fleet who wants one as well as providing a creative outlet for those who enjoy ‘assimilating’ themselves into the StarBase 118 realm. With so much talent in one place, those who simply have an interest in the creation of such photos can also come to ask questions, get advice, and improve their own photo manipulation skills.

Not only will the team have a place to gather on the StarBase 118 Forums, but they will also have an area of the wiki where they will be able to upload and share some of their best works. There are already officers expressing excitement over the team and what kind of images they will produce.

The idea for the team was conceived by Lt. Commander Kalianna Nicholotti, who enjoys making avatars and signature banners for her crew and any other members of the fleet who ask for one. Those who wish to join should contact her via e-mail, or via YM, kaidasuyuki.

April 2011 Applications and Referrals

Each month, the Publicity Team posts the number of applications our community received for the previous month and how those applicants found our group. This summary will give you an idea of how we are reaching new applicants and how we can improve our efforts to reach new audiences. Holographic Science Lounge opening

“The most exciting phrase to hear in science, the one that heralds new discoveries, is not ‘Eureka!’ but ‘That’s funny…'” –Isaac Asimov

Science officers across the Fleet, it’s a pleasure to invite you to the inauguration of the Holographic Science Lounge, the first holographic subspace communication protocol for use across several ships. After some test runs, the Science Exchange Forum is proud to announce its opening.

You can join us from the Holodeck in your ship. Simply enter here.

This is not only a meeting place for recreation, it’s the live representation of the Science Exchange Forum. So, once you come to the Holodeck, you can inform us (here) of your status as science officer and your research interests. You can join the Forum discussions on several pressing matters on diverse subjects related to our department. As more officers join the Science Exchange Forum, both our discussions and our work for the Duty post will improve.

Also, any officers out there who want to join the discussion but are not science officers at the moment are welcome, too.

January 2011 Academy Graduates

Each month we want to let you know about the number of graduates from the Starbase 118 Academy during the previous month and where those cadets are assigned. Unfortunately, not all applicants graduate from the Academy because they either do not respond to Roll Call or do not complete the Academy requirements. The Training Team makes every effort to involve all applicants and to encourage them to complete the training. A special thank you goes to Captain Toni Turner for gathering this data.

We Have the Technology!

Roll Call has been called for all Engineering Officers to step forward and and introduce themselves with the many other Officers serving in the ‘Fleet!

We are currently developing our Duty Post and contributing ideas on making technology that could blow the minds of our most famous alumni.  As such, we would love the help of the unique Engineers we have already contributing to our vessels!

If you’re an Engineering Officer, please come along, introduce yourself and see if you can lend a wrench in the right place!

Leadership Roster on the wiki

We have many leadership positions in our fleet, which give members the opportunity to help guide and facilitate the building of content and development of our membership. To keep track of all these positions, we’ve started the Leadership Roster on our wiki, which lists all the non-ship leadership positions, and gives information about the minimum rank required to hold those positions. The list is on the wiki, so members are welcome to help maintain it in the event that a Facilitator has gone inactive. If you’re interested in applying for one of the positions listed, post on the Leadership Roster Maintenance Thread on the forums.
