How Does Top Sims Contest Judging Work?

Four times a year, the fleet at large is asked to vote for the Top Sim in each Set, which then goes on to the final vote by the fleet to crown the Top Sim of the Year. But how do these sims get decided on for your votes?

The Contest year is divided into 26 Rounds, and each Round lasts for two weeks. At the close of the nomination period for each Round, the Top Sims facilitator compiles the nominations and brings them before the Top Sims Judges for voting. The Top Sims Judges, comprising of a member from each ship in the fleet, use their best judgement and the Contest ranking criteria guidelines to determine a ranking of the nominations using a system called “Instant Runoff Voting”. In order to maintain fairness and integrity, a Top Sims Judge is not allowed to give top ranking to a nomination from their own ship. Once all the votes have been cast from all Judges in a Round, the facilitator will calculate the Round winning nomination by compiling the votes.

The Top Sims Judge from each ship works hard to represent their ship, so be sure to send them a note of thanks for their efforts! If you are interested in being considered as a Top Sims Judge, let your commanding officer know, as Top Sims Judges are in place for set term lengths and new Judges are needed all the time.

For a more detailed look into the system that goes into determining Top Sim voting, be sure to check out the Contest wiki page and forum threads.

Top Sims Contest Set 1, 2017 Winners: Jalana Rajel & Sal Taybrim

Voting has just finished for Set 1 of the Top Sims Contest and a winner has been selected: Jalana Rajel of the USS Constitution and Sal Taybrim of Starbase 118 Ops for their joint sim “Captain to Captain“!

After sims are nominated by our general membership for the contest, a panel of judges reviews the nominations from each Round and selects their favorite to proceed to the corresponding Run-Off Set. The yearly calendar of Rounds is divided into four Sets, with about seven Rounds each. For more information, check out the Top Sims Contest calendar.

The Captains’ sim now moves on to the final vote of the year in December to compete against the three other Set winners for the title of “Top Sim of 2017.” Many congratulations to Jalana Rajel and Sal Taybrim on this honor. For your win, please display the following Badge (or enhancement) with pride:

Everyone is welcome to nominate sims of their fellow crew for the contest. If you think a sim is particularly well-written, be sure to show that writer how much you enjoyed the sim by nominating it! Just head to the Top Sims Contest forum to make your nomination now.

Place your vote in Top Sims Runoff Set 1

The poll is now live for Runoff Set 1 of the 2017 Top Sims Contest! In the runoff rounds, members (like you!) decide which sims head to the final round of the Top Sims Contest in December.

These sims below were chosen by a panel of judges (one from each ship) from the sims submitted in Rounds 1-6 of the contest.

TO START, please read these sims:

NEXT, vote for the sim you like the most. Click here to go to the poll now.

DON’T vote for a sim just because you serve on the same crew as the person who wrote it. It should be the sim that’s the best written, with strong characterization, and evocative or descriptive scene-setting. Any crew that “stuffs the ballot” (by having everyone on the crew vote for the same sim to ensure that it wins this poll) will be eliminated from the contest and shamed by the rest of the community as terrible, terrible cheaters. That would be awful.

Good luck to the nominees!

Top Sims Contest 2016 – A Year in Review

The Top Sims Contest enjoyed a banner year in 2016, with the contest stats the same as or better than previous years. With 205 nominations, we enjoyed an average of 8 nominations per round over the 26 rounds that comprise the contest year. As well, all the Run-Off Set votes approached or surpassed a 20% fleet participation threshold, and the vote to determine the Top Sim of 2016 garnered nearly a 40% fleet participation rating!

With such a successful year, the Top Sims Contest saw a lot of accolades handed out in the form of contest-specific badges. In recognition of the accomplishments of all those feted this year in the Top Sims Contest, here is a recap of the badges awarded in 2016:

The honors of Top Sim of 2016 goes to…

Thanks to everyone who participated in this year’s Top Sims Contest, including those who wrote amazing sims, nominated their peers, and voted in our run-off rounds. After 205 nominations, 26 rounds, 4 run-off set votes, and a final vote that garnered nearly 40% of the fleet’s participation, we have finally crowned the Top Sim of 2016!

Please join us in congratulating Lt. Commanders T’Lea and Rune Jolara for their sim, “Defying a Direct Order“!

Both winners have earned the “Top Sim of the Year” badge, to be displayed with honor and distinction.

With everyone’s assistance, we can make 2017’s Top Sims Contest an even bigger success. Remember to nominate often, even your own sims, and be sure to vote in the run-off sets and in the final vote of the year to crown the Top Sim of 2017. Submitting a sim to the Top Sims Contest is a great way to show your fellow crewmembers that you’re enjoying what they’re writing.
