New Captains Council Magistrate: Sal Taybrim

The Captains Council (“CC”) is one of two administrative bodies for our community, and is tasked with managing promotions to the rank of Commander, as well as a host of issues regarding the universe in which we play. Each year, the CC elects a Magistrate, whose job it is to facilitate ongoing discussions, tally and record votes, and act as the official messenger for the council to the Executive Council and the fleet at large.

This role plays an important part of keeping Captains Council business on track, and those who hold the role are often top candidates for higher office with the Executive Council.

For 2018, the council has selected Captain Sal Taybrim, Commanding Officer of Starbase 118 Ops, as its Magistrate. Congratulations to her for this recognition!

Taybrim’s writer, Jamie, was profiled in July 2017, as well as in March of 2016. She has been decorated with the Russ Bar, Nebula Bar, TOSMA, and Q Awards, as well as the Prantares Ribbon (Medical Officer of the year), the prestigious Rising Star Award in 2015, the James T. Kirk Cross, and the Christopher Pike Pendant, making her one of our most decorated captains currently serving in the fleet.

Let’s talk about transfers

Most people in the fleet love their ship and would be loathe to leave it unless forced to. But sometimes, making a change is necessary to refresh your skills, learn more about simming, meet new people, or just move into a role you’ll enjoy more. That’s when it’s time to start thinking about a transfer.

Simply enough, a transfer is the move of your primary or secondary character from one ship to another. (You can only sim on two ships at a time. And you don’t need to file a transfer form to move NPCs between ships – just talk to your CO.)

When a transfer form is submitted, the Fleet Placement Officer (FPO) reviews it and makes a good-faith effort to find a placement that fulfills those requests as closely as possible. Sometimes the requests are not available – positions might be filled by someone else, or the ship might already have a full crew. In that case, the FPO will use secondary requests as submitted on the form, but if those also aren’t a fit, the FPO will contact the player and ask if they want to consider other open roles or ships, or stay where they are. Per our Constitution (Article V, Section 15), members are protected in the event their placements can’t be fulfilled.

We make every effort to try and keep the transfer process as simple and convenient for members as possible as we’d rather have members transfer to a new ship they think they might like better rather than drop out completely! But we always recommend that players talk to their Commanding Officer as openly and frankly as possible to resolve any disputes before trying to transfer – sometimes a good discussion can sort out any confusion or issues that seem intractable.

If a transfer still sounds like the best option to ensure you can keep simming, click here to check out the transfer form and learn more about the process.

How to start a second character

Did you know that you could play a second character (on a completely different ship) once you’ve achieved the rank of Lieutenant? If you want to sim more than you already are, and have an idea that you want to try out with a new character, all it takes is filing a form and you’ll have the opportunity to place a second character on a new ship in the fleet.

Before you start, make sure to put together a basic bio, and brainstorm some ideas for this character so you can jump right in, once you’re placed. Check the Intelligent Lifeform Index to find a species that is permitted to play for characters. Then check out some of the other ships in the fleet to learn more about options, and refresh your knowledge of duty posts to make sure you know what you’re getting into.

Here’s a few things to know about secondary characters:

  • You still have to sim at full-time pace (an average of three sims a week and a minimum of 12 sims a month) for both characters.
  • Your new character can hold a rank equal to, or below, the rank of your primary character.
  • Awards and badges are applied to you, as a writer, not to your characters. Service Ribbons apply only to the character they’ve been given to and can’t be transferred to secondary characters.

Ready to start your new character? Click here to fill out the secondary character form to get started.

It may take a few days to get a response for your form. Please be patient while we work on your request.
