A new special award has been launched and is up for grabs later this year as part of the annual awards ceremonies! The Locutus Award will be presented to a member of the Publicity Team who has gone above and beyond their basic requirements for team participation in a similar way to the Training Team’s Boothby Award!
Members of the fleet will be able to place nominations for prospective recipients of this award as a part of the annual awards process that will start towards the end of the year. Whether you’re a member of the publicity team or not, if you see someone kicking themselves into overdrive, showing real enthusiasm for putting the name UFOP: Starbase 118 out there for all to see and dreaming up new ways of enticing potential members to join our ranks then this award is definitely for them!
Remember – if you’re interested in joining the Publicity Team, all you need to do is head here and click join!
Greetings to everyone from the Publicity Team!
We’re pleased to announce that we’ve gained some new members – a huge thanks to Lieutenant (j.g.) Richard Matthews, Ensign James, Lieutenant Commander Hannibal Parker and Lieutenant Commander Eerie for joining our ranks! With their help we’ll be continuing in our ongoing mission to spread the word about UFOP: Starbase 118 and keep bringing in the new recruits!
Now that we’re firing on all cylinders again after our short spell of website downtime, we’re motoring ahead to pick up on the applications that we missed out on during that time! YOU can help in two ways this month, and here’s how!
The first is easy. Do you know anyone who’d enjoy SIMming with us? If you do, ask them! It really is that simple! Talk to them a bit about the group and see if they’d like to join!
The second is to give us some links to your favourite Star Trek blogs! We’re always looking for cool Trek related things to link on facebook and twitter, so if you’re currently following anything that could help us then please contact Captain Diego Herrera (firstname.lastname@example.org) with a URL. And if you don’t, but have a spare 10 minutes to do some searching then that would also be much appreciated!
As usual, don’t forget to like/follow us on facebook and twitter! Just look for UFOP: Starbase 118!
Here at UFOP: Starbase 118 we all have the chance to share in an amazing hobby. We all draw huge amounts of reward from our continued adventures aboard our ships. Each of us has something in particular that we enjoy above all else – that could be the chance to earn promotions and move up through the ranks, the sense of achievement we get from winning one of the group’s myriad OOC competitions, or the joy of watching our characters evolve as their stories continue to be told!
The Publicity Team brings you this mission as Star Trek: Into Darkness reignites the passion for Star Trek worldwide – which of those rewards would appeal most to your Trek-fan friends? Which of them would appeal to those friends of yours who love roleplaying or sci-fi and would be willing to take part in a Star Trek-based RPG? Which element of the film did they enjoy the most, and how can we relate it to what we do here in the fleet?
More to the point… how cool would it be if you could share this amazing hobby with your real life friends? Imagine how easy it would be to cook up nefarious plots that could grace a ship during shore leave, or be written for the enjoyment of the fleet as a whole in the character café? Wouldn’t it be cool to have the chance to share the SIMs you take so much time and care over writing with your friends and inspire them to reach the same levels of achievement?
We need YOU to spread the word about the fleet to the people you know would enjoy it – remember, you’re the best person to sell it to them because you know what they like!
As a special request – this month we need extra help to bring in a flood of new members! Now we’re ready and raring to go again, the academy holodecks are screaming to be filled with new cadets who’ve heard good things about our group! Click here to find out how you can help!
The push is beginning! The doors to our fantastic roleplaying community are always open to new members, but we need you to help us knock down the front wall in order to accommodate a stampede of new members when Star Trek: Into Darkness hits our screens! Every available fleet member can easily spend a little under 10 minutes to help us to advertise our group and channel that stampede in the right direction!
“So what do I need to do,” I hear you ask?
Simple! We’re looking to increase our representation across active Star Trek forums with the group’s best possible ambassadors – you guys! All you need to do to start helping is to head here to find a list of active forums, make sure you’re signed up, and start posting! There should already be a place to post personal logs for your character (look for SB118 in Roleplaying/SIMming/Gaming) but you don’t have to restrict yourself to that! Join in with anything at all that’s happening on the board, making sure you’re always representing us well and painting us in a good light!
So how does that get us new members? When you join the forum, make sure you have a great sig (you could use the one you already have for our own forums if it’s compliant with forum rules!) and include a link to our main site (https://www.starbase118.net) in your signature text! The combination of an eye catching signature, a catchy slogan and that link should have members flocking to our gates!
Remember – you don’t need to be a member of the Publicity Team to go forth and recruit! If you get a taste for it then please feel free to join us!
As Star Trek: Into Darkness draws ever closer, it’s time for UFOP: Starbase 118 to prepare to send out hails on all frequencies in preparation to bring as many people as we can into the fleet! The best possible ambassador for our group is YOU! Who better to instill enthusiasm into the legions of trek fans out there and tempt them to join our ranks!
While the Publicity Team members put their pedal to the metal, there are a couple of little things that the membership at large (that’s you!) can do that will have a serious impact in helping us out! For those of you who have Facebook accounts, we’d love you to follow us! Everyone who likes and shares our posts is spreading the good word to friends who may potentially do the same! That gives us a shot at reaching people who we would otherwise not be reaching, and there’s no telling who we could tempt in. The same goes for Twitter! Give us a follow and retweet our posts! It’s all great advertising!
Also, we have a great opportunity to make an impact in real life by posting our awesome flyers in local comic book/sci-fi stores! To find out how to get one, for free, and help to spread the magic to other trek fans, head here. Advertising in this way helps us reach out to countless people who may not know that we exist or that email roleplaying exists!
If you’re interested in joining the Publicity Team to help with the big push, check out our recruitment page!
With your help, we should be able to dramatically increase the number of people who want to join our awesome fleet over the course of the next couple of months and beyond! Any time you can spare for us would be greatly appreciated! Remember – more members means more ships, a stronger community, and huge possibilities for the future!
We’re now just under two months away from the most eagerly anticipated Star Trek event of the year – the release of Star Trek: Into Darkness! When the first film in J. J. Abrams’s run was released in 2009, UFOP: Starbase 118 saw a large influx of members. Some of you reading now may remember joining at that time! We’re expecting a similar occurence this time around – we need to be ready to reach out to the members of the Star Trek community who are itching to continue the journey to seek out new life and discover strange new worlds that begins, or is reawakend, with a simple trip to the cinema!
The publicity team has always been responsible for marketing our group and enticing in new members to swell our ranks. We’re currently in the process of a relaunch – refocussing our efforts into search engine optimisation, social networking and casting our net as wide as possible to increase the number of people that we reach. We’re always looking for new members to help us in our endeavours! If you can spare 15 minutes per week (or more!) and you’d like to help bring new blood into the group then all you need to do is talk to your CO, who will be able to arrange with Captain Herrera for you to join the team! But joining the publicity team isn’t the only way you can help!
This call goes out to ALL members of the fleet who have a Facebook account (under your real name!) – have you found the UFOP: Starbase 118 Facebook page and liked it? We need you to like and share our Facebook posts – the more people we have doing that, the more our group gets noticed. Who knows, someone in your extended network of friends might be a secret Star Trek addict and dying to joing a Play By Email roleplay? And if your friends like and share our posts too, that’s when the magic happens! Taking it even further, if you have a twitter account, the same thing is possible – follow us on twitter and retweet our posts to spread the word to the masses!
We need you! It’s time to move this project to warp speed!
The Fleetbook team is currently collecting bios for all members of the fleet who were with us for 2389! We’re hoping to create comprehensive ship rosters that include bios for crew who were present during that year. Here’s what we need:
- 250 words: Brief Character Bio (IC): Tell us what the most important facts are about your character, any achievements of theirs from before 2389, what their most defining personality trait is, or anything that you think we need to know about them!
- 150 words: Personal Round-Up of 2389 (IC): What was the most important thing that happened to your character last year? How would you describe 2389 in a nutshell?
We’re looking to have everything collected and ready by February 28th. At that point, the process of adding them to the fleetbook will begin! Here’s where to submit your bios… (In order of preference – you don’t have to do both!)
1. Ask on your ship’s OOC thread if there’s a fleetbook rep on your crew! Mail your bio to them directly!
2. Go to the forums and drop it in here!
The team is eagerly anticipating receiving your bios! Act now!
There are still a few weeks left to get your entries in for the March/April round of the Writing Challenge! This year, it’s all to play for, as all of the ships in the fleet compete head to head for the title of overall Writing Challenge winner 2012! Each winner scores 3 points for their ship, and each runner up scores 1 point. At this early stage it’s all to play for: the Tiger is currently in the lead on 3 points, with the Mercury in second place on 1.
Of course, you can’t have a shot at earning points for your ship if you’re not involved! The category for this round is “The Storm”, as chosen by last month’s winner, Velana, who will be joining us on the judging panel this time around. Whether you’ve entered before or you haven’t, why not take a shot at submitting a piece of flash-fiction, up to 3000 words in length! Not only do you have a shot at taking your ship to the top of the league, but the winner will also receive a banner to forever preserve the honour of their victory on the forums!
What are you waiting for? It’s time to get scribbling!
This week, Poll of the Week asks which Starfleet captain you think has most inspired your character, or that you find inspirational. Did you take the way that Janeway fearlessly led her crew out of the Delta Quadrant to heart? Or did you find yourself hanging on every word of Jean-Luc Picard’s speeches? Did Kirk’s go get ’em attitude resonate with your outlook on life? Either way, we’d love to hear where you cast your vote and your reasons for doing so, so come on down and let us know what you think!
This week, Poll of the Week asks whereabouts in the world you hail from? With so many people spread out across the world, we’re an international fleet, and we’d love to hear which continent you call home! As usual, if you have any more information you’d like to share, come on down and let us know! Also, a warm welcome and good luck to Lieutenant Commander Arden Cain, who will be running Poll of the Week from now on!
