Jalana Rajel promoted to Commodore

The Executive Council is pleased to announce the promotion of Fleet Captain Jalana Rajel to the rank and title of Commodore.

Commodore Rajel is the first member to be promoted to Commodore after the introduction of new formal rules in Bylaw 2 by the EC that govern when and how this rank and title is to be awarded. Commodore is now an exclusive rank and title that captains and fleet captains can earn in UFOP: StarBase 118 once they have served as commanding officer of a vessel for five years (whether continuously during one tenure or cumulatively over multiple commands). Having completed their own “five-year mission” aboard their ships, these COs are recognized by our community as among our finest leaders in the fleet.

New Captain Pike series ‘Star Trek: Strange New Worlds’ announced

Star Trek fans (including members of UFOP: StarBase 118) rejoiced after CBS officially announced the upcoming series Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, which will feature the adventures of Captain Pike, Number One, and Mr. Spock aboard the USS Enterprise in a “more episodic” and “classic Star Trek” show.

Strange New Worlds is the latest addition to the expanding library of new Trek shows on the network’s streaming service CBS All Access. In a video released on Twitter yesterday, actors Anson Mount, Rebecca Romijn, and Ethan Peck expressed their gratitude to the outpouring of fan support and demand for a new series based on their characters after their popular reception on season two of Star Trek: Discovery.

“You asked, we listened. It’s happening,” said Peck, who plays a younger iteration of Spock, the half-human, half-Vulcan science officer aboard the USS Enterprise.

While reception to the newest shows Star Trek: Discovery and Star Trek: Picard has varied widely among fans, the reintroduction of the Captain Pike character on Discovery was met with overwhelming praise. Paralleling the efforts of fans half a century ago to avert the threat of the original series’ cancellation with a massive letter-writing campaign to the network, the possibility of a new Pike-centered series was energized from enthusiastic fan response, with executive producer Alex Kurtzman telling The Hollywood Reporter in April 2019 that “the fans have been heard.”

“We’re gonna get to work on a classic Star Trek show that deals with optimism and the future,” promised Anson Mount in yesterday’s video announcement. Mount, most well-known previously for his role as Cullen Bohannon in the AMC western drama Hell on Wheels, will return in Strange New Worlds as Captain Christopher Pike, the man who commanded the Enterprise a decade before Captain Kirk of the original 1960s Star Trek television series.

Anson Mount made a lasting impression on fans with his portrayal of Captain Pike in Star Trek: Discovery.

Describing the upcoming show as “classic Star Trek” could be a clue, along with its title, that it will return to the more familiar storytelling structure for those who grew up on the original series or the Star Trek: The Next Generation era of spinoffs. Producer Akiva Goldsman confirmed in an interview with Variety released after the announcement that Strange New Worlds will be more episodic.

“We’re going to try to harken back to some classical ‘Trek’ values, to be optimistic, and to be more episodic,” said Goldsman. “Obviously, we will take advantage of the serialized nature of character and story-building, but I think our plots will be more closed-ended than you’ve seen in either Discovery or Picard.

Immediate fan reaction was overwhelmingly positive, including among the members of the UFOP: StarBase 118 RPG community from across the globe.

“Am I excited?” responded Deliera, a member from Australia who writes for Sky Blake, first officer of the USS Veritas. “You bet your Vulcan mind I’m excited!”

“OHMAGAWD,” said Nathaniel, a member from the United Kingdom who writes for Thalas th’Koro on the USS Atlantis, before his universal translator exploded.

“A series with Captain Pike? Yes, please,” said Andrea, a member from Spain who writes for Alieth on the USS Thor. “How the writers have scripted the character for Anson so far and how much the actor has invested in the character makes me 100% confident that I will enjoy the new series.”

UFOP: StarBase 118 founder Jordan, better known to many in the community as Fleet Admiral Tristan Wolf, echoed the sentiment.

“It’s so gratifying to see the powers that be making a Captain Pike show – his commitment to the ideals of Starfleet are an inspiring return to the utopian Roddenberry vision of TNG,” he said.

In the midst of these difficult and uncertain times from a global pandemic that has affected millions, yesterday’s announcement indeed proved that even before its premiere, Strange New Worlds has already helped bring a little bit of that Trek optimism back to its fans and a promise of a great future to come.

Revised Script Format Begins November 1, 2019

Attention all hands!

This past July, we announced that the fleet would begin a process towards dropping the use of double colons before narrative text unless it is for actions written within dialogue (“in-line actions”). You can read more about why we are making this change in our previous announcement. Essentially, instead of formatting your narrative text like this:

::Crewman Taz Shandres cautiously stepped into the eerie confines of the freighter’s engine room.::

Shandres: ::taking deep breaths:: oO It’s so dark in here. You can hardly see anything! Oo

::As Taz walked through the area, though, she saw a diagnostic panel. Its display was dimmed but still showing signs of life.::

Shandres: Hey! ::looks back over her shoulder:: I found something, sir!

You would write it as simply:

Crewman Taz Shandres cautiously stepped into the eerie confines of the freighter’s engine room.

Shandres: ::taking deep breaths:: oO It’s so dark in here. You can hardly see anything! Oo

As Taz walked through the area, though, she saw a diagnostic panel. Its display was dimmed but still showing signs of life.

Shandres: Hey! ::looks back over her shoulder:: I found something, sir!

Four ships in the fleet have already been simming in the new format for the last few months.

Today, we are announcing that the fleet as a whole will be moving to the new standard on Friday, November 1, 2019.

Your captain and first officer will be able to help guide you through the transition if you have any questions. Again, the heart of the change is simply removing the double colons from narrative text unless it is for in-line actions written in dialogue. With this change, we hope to make our simming format more accessible for both new members and those who may read your sims outside of your daily simming, such as in general RPG simming contests, writing workshops, and other venues where the wonderful writing of our community is showcased.

If you have any questions about the format changes, let us know in this forum thread!

Quinn Reynolds promoted to Vice Admiral; Jalana Rajel, Sal Taybrim, and Roshanara Rahman promoted to Fleet Captain

The Executive Council is very happy to announce the promotions of several staff members:

  • Quinn Reynolds, commanding officer of USS Gorkon & StarBase 118 Academy Commandant, has been promoted to Vice Admiral.
  • Jalana Rajel, commanding officer of USS Constitution-B, has been promoted to Fleet Captain.
  • Sal Taybrim, commanding officer of StarBase 118 Ops, has been promoted to Fleet Captain.
  • Roshanara Rahman, commanding officer of USS Veritas, has been promoted to Fleet Captain.

Emma, the writer for Vice Admiral Reynolds, has been with the fleet for 12 years now and has been a steady hand, an incredibly capable simmer, and the consummate leader in her time with the fleet. Before her last promotion, Rear Admiral Renos described her as a tremendous force for good, stating, “As a writer, she has gained recognition through the top sims competition and the writing challenges. She is much loved by the crew she leads with a fair and even hand. She is dedicated, passionate about the fleet and generous with her time. She has worked in many roles including Captain’s Council Magistrate, Captain at Large, EC member, Cadet Steward and Deputy Commandant for the Academy to name a few and has excelled in them all.”

Today, she continues to lead the USS Gorkon as its captain and serves as the Academy Commandant. Her incredible service to the fleet shows the kind of dedication Emma has to making the fleet work.

Jess, the writer for Fleet Captain Rajel, is a stalwart member of the Starbase 118 staff, running her ship with tremendous care, dedication and an even hand. Under her leadership, the Constitution is approaching its fourth year of service — a fantastic achievement for any CO — and is well-regarded around the fleet as a stable, successful ship that’s a lot of fun to be aboard.

That’s not her only involvement in the fleet — who could overlook what she’s done leading the Image Collective? The work this team does is so integral to our fleet, and brings a huge amount of joy to our members when they see their characters realised in a picture. Not to mention all the contributions Jalana has personally made, from ship banners and logos to many of our awards and service ribbons. For all these reasons, a promotion to the rank of Fleet Captain is a well-deserved recognition of all the time, effort and devotion that she has poured into our fleet.

Jamie, the writer for Fleet Captain Taybrim, has been the CO of Starbase 118 Operations for closing on three years, and its First Officer prior to that. As a fixed installation, Ops sometimes requires a little thinking outside the box to keep missions fresh and interesting in the long term, and Jamie has proven more than up to the task, bringing excitement, flair and fun in equal measure to our namesake sim.

That’s not all she does. The fleet chats are a hugely popular event that run so well and so smoothly because of Jamie’s efforts in organising and moderating them. She’s a valuable voice on the EC, bringing her leadership experience in other RP mediums to any discussion, often providing a unique and useful point of view because of it. It was just last year that Sal was awarded the Staff Member of the Year. All of this speaks highly of Jamie, and clearly demonstrates someone who is well-deserving of a promotion to Fleet Captain.

Rich, the writer for Fleet Captain Rahman, has changed our group for the better many times over. From his early days simply improving the wiki with a host of new images and templates, to where he stands now as the outgoing Captain at Large, commanding officer of the Veritas, Deputy Commandant of the Academy, facilitator and founder of the Federation News Service team and spinoff website, and my own personal Jiminy Cricket, he’s shown us time and again how dedicated he is to the success of our community and to our members, who have a loyal advocate in this staff member. For all these reasons, Rich deserves the promotion to the rank of Fleet Captain as recognition for all his hard work, and to place him in an honored position in our fleet as one of our highest ranking members and leaders.
