November 2011 Academy Graduates

Each month, we want to keep you apprised of the number of graduates from the Starbase 118 Academy. Unfortunately, not all applicants graduate from the Academy because the either do not respond to roll call or do not complete the Academy requirements. The Training Team makes every effort to involve all applicants and to encourage them to complete the training.

Duronis II Embassy wins simming award!

Our very own Duronis II Embassy has been awarded Simming League‘s “Most Creative Sim” award in the Tournament of Simulations!

After a month of observing sims, the judges of this competition awarded the Embassy for its stories that encompass unique Star Trek characters’ lives on a planet and on a starship. The contest organizer, Chas Hammer, praised the Embassy/Thunder group saying, “The crew is intensely active and shows a fond imagination, and the host and game masters received high marks for keeping everything moving.”

The Simming League is an intersimming organization dedicated to strengthening ties within the simming and online role-playing communities and was founded in 1997. The first Tournament of Simulations was held in 1999, but has been on hiatus for four years. SB118 competed against several other Star Trek play by e-mail role-playing groups in a number of categories.

Halloween Story Competition

If you’re reading this you probably enjoy writing Star Trek stories. Did you know that it was a Star Trek story that won the Flashback Week competition back on August? It was a fantastic story where a team who had crashed on a hostile Cardassian planet had to fight to survive, you can read the story here.

It’s October and Halloween is just around the corner, so it’s time for another story competition! OngoingWorlds is running a Halloween story competition for all roleplayers. As we all write stories anyway, why not combine the two? Create a spooky Halloween story for your roleplaying game and just submit it to the competition.

The kind of story we’re looking for will be heart-thumpingly thrilling, spine-tinglingly scary, and maybe just a bit stomach-churningly gory. Star Trek isn’t usually known for being scary, but I can remember certain episodes that have been really spooky, Neelix telling the ghost story in the Voyager episode ‘The Haunting of Deck Twelve‘ about creatures in the dark is perfect for a Halloween story!

If you think you can step up to the challenge and write something really scary, get typing and send us your story!

To enter the competition all you have to do is write a story about the characters in your roleplaying game (we don’t mind if it doesn’t fit into the current storyline of your game) and submit it to us using the form below before the 31st of October. The top 10 stories will be published online and credit will be given to the author and also to the game you’re in – which should hopefully help advertise your game to get new members.

This article was written by David Ball.

David has been a roleplayer for over 10 years, and is the creater of OngoingWorlds.com for people to write stories together. This is his second year running flashback week.

The best Star Trek stories from Flashback week 2011

You might have heard about Flashback week last month which was an event for roleplayers to think about their characters past and write a flashback to a previous time in their lives. We had many Star Trek stories submitted for the competition, including Starbase 118’s Lieutenant Saveron, who was a runner-up in the competition! Here are some of the great Star Trek flashback stories that were written for Flashback week.
