The Epic Moments of Star Trek: TNG

There are those moments in any good television series that stir our inner emotions. They are comments on society, progressive actions for equality or peace, things that tug at our heartstings in deeply fundamental and life-changing ways. One of the most enduring features of Star Trek, especially when it was written by Gene Roddenberry, was that it had these commentaries sprinkled liberally throughout the episodes.

Next in our survey of the epic moments of Star Trek is the Next Generation. When TNG first came on the air, no one thought that the show would work without the original crew. One, maybe two seasons, most predictions said, and it would be gone. However, it went on to seven excellent seasons largely on the power of its writting and the special moments that it created for its fans and how it connected them to the cast and to the changing world around them.

What moments from the Next Gen affected you? Which ones do you think have entered society’s consciousness? While there are more than we can include here, here are a few of my favorites!

Poll of the Week: The Epic Moments of TOS

There are those moments in any good television series that stir our inner emotions. They are comments on society, progressive actions for equality or peace, things that tug at our heartstings in deeply fundamental and life-changing ways. One of the most enduring features of Star Trek, especially when it was written by Gene Roddenberry, was that it had these commentaries sprinkled liberally throughout the episodes.

This week’s poll will begin a series of polls on these moments, starting with the Original Series. Set far in the future, TOS was written and produced at a time of huge social upheavals and stresses in the United States. The Old South was aflame with the Civil Rights Movement, thousands of young men were involved in the increasingly unpopular war in Vietnam and the country was in an existential struggle with the USSR known as the Cold War. Roddenberry’s genius was to write commentary into many of his episodes of TOS that made clear his opinions.

Halloween Avatar Costume Contest IV

On Halloween, all the children in the U.S., at least those with the cool parents, go out to the surrounding homes to extort as much candy as they can from their neighbors in a sick and twisted protection racket that would get adults tossed in jail, foreshadowing the sick and twisted way that their cute tummies will feel in the morning (namely sick and twisted, not to mention distended and bloated!).

And each year on our forums, we do our best to save our members from these sorts of holiday hoodlums while still allowing them to enjoy the Halloween fun! For a fourth year in a row, the forums administration group is once again sponsoring our yearly Avatar Costume Contest.

Entrants will be judged on a group basis by ship, based on the ship’s theme originality and avatar quality, as well as the level of the crew’s participation. Winners will get a banner for their ship site as well as bragging rights for the next year! Judge’s Choice awards will be given, as well as, new for this year, a special individual best of show award.

To join in the fun, and for more information about how to set up your ship’s entry into the contest, head to the forums!

Poll of the Week: What Do You Wear?

As an adventure-based roleplaying group, the focus is understandably on the waking hours of our days. After all, there isn’t much adventure going on when you’re asleep, is there? However, this week’s poll attempts to delve into those times when you are not being the hero, saving the galaxy from <insert villain here> and getting the girl/guy to boot. So, let’s think off-duty, which I know if hard for many of us. Leave your post to Ensign Smith, wind down, yawn, get ready for bed, then look in the mirror and click on the poll of the week link.

What are you most comfortable in when you go to bed? Click here and share!

Poll of the Week: Funniest moments of the Star Trek Movies

As we wrap up our series on the comedy of Star Trek, we are left with the wonderful trove of classic movie moments. Even the “bad” movies have their giggle points, times when the crew are making like of their plights, making fun of each other, or simply out lashing in frustration. The cultural comments abound throughout the movies and there are lots of points where they are used to hilarious effect. From the campy 70’s-ness of the ST: The Motion Picture to the epic battle of ST: Nemesis, there’s humor to be had out among the stars. Sometimes it is planned, sometimes forced and other times completely unintended, but it still tickles the funny bone.

While there are more than we could possibly put in here, here are a few of my favorites. Vote on yours and add more!

Poll of the Week: Funniest Moments in Star Trek: Enterprise

Hello everyone and welcome to the next chapter in our comedy of Star Trek series, our focus on the ill-fated Enterprise.

In the canon prequel series, we see humankind for the first time traveling out into the stars at Warp 5, the holy grail of interstellar travel. However, they find out quickly that, even in their own little corner of the wide wide galaxy, there is a lot to be feared: a shadowy Temporal Cold War, hostile alien empires, wars between friends that need serious mediation, and other stuff hitherto unimagined. Throughout it all, even when the Earth itself is on the brink of being destroyed, the crew manages to keep their spirits up!

Come see how and share your favorite funny moments of Archer and the gang!

Poll of the Week: Funniest Moments in ST: Voyager

This week, we continue our exploration of Star Trek comedy moments with an installment aboard our favorite little ship that could, USS Voyager.

Being thrown 70,000 light years from home and having the Captain destroy the only available means of getting back could have really gotten the crew of Voyager down. That’s not even to mention what it did to the crew of the Maquis raider! Did we have a sullen and depressed show for the next seven years? Heck no! Capt. Janeway and her mismatched band had quite a merry time on their way across the galaxy.

Come pick from our favorite moments and share your own!
