We’re here with another interview with a newer member of our community. The title of this column is “Lower Decks,” hearkening back to the Star Trek: The Next Generation episode titled “Lower Decks,” in which junior officers aboard the Enterprise-D speculate on the reasons for recent unusual actions taken by the command crew near the Cardassian border.
This month’s interview is with the writer behind Lieutenant Corey Wethern playing a Human Male Medical Officer assigned to StarBase118 Ops.
S. Richards: Tell us a little about the writer behind the character — where in the world do you hail from? Anything you’d like to share!
Wethern: That is always a tough question. In reality I am from London in the UK. Very much into my running, gaming and photography. However pretty ordinary.
What was your introduction to Science Fiction in general and Star Trek specifically?
I grew up watching repeats of Star Trek in the evenings originally with The Next Generation then Voyager, before coming back round to finish off DS9. I have to say as I’ve got older I do have a love for the Original Series and loved the Picard adventures. That said I’m also a big Star Wars and Ghostbusters fan.
What is your experience with roleplaying?
I’ve had a bit of varied experience with roleplaying, I used to do a lot more D&D years ago and have even tried my hand at LARP. However with family and work, Starbase 118 works really well with being able to roleplay with no specific times. Everyone has been really welcoming as well.
What brought you to SB118?
I started to play some of the solo Star Trek Adventures RPG books and thought there must be some groups online and came across SB118 and took a dive to beam aboard.
Why did you choose this specific character and duty post?
I work in healthcare in my day job but always loved the sarcasm and humour of both the McCoy characters of Deforest Kelly and Karl Urban and try to incorporate little nods to them through my character.
Where do you see your character five years from now?
Corey is at a bit of a crossroads in his career. Prior to the fleet wide story he was working towards maybe joining the Archangels Marine group as he has a bit of a murky rebellious path. However during this mission he has been acting up as Assistant Chief Medical Officer. Although he wouldn’t admit it he does enjoy it as long as he is allowed to still create a little chaos.
One definite for 5 years time is his love of crime noir holo novels with Ross and the odd drinking session with Wyn and Marsh.
Thanks for your time, Lieutenant Wethern!
