Domestic terrorist group “Maquis Reborn” leads an attack on Deep Space 10

On 3rd November 2391, a domestic terrorist organisation known as the Maquis Reborn, commanded by Nikael Kalre, makes its presence known to Starfleet and the Federation in an attack on Deep Space 10. More information about this expedition may be found on our wiki.

The crew was stranded in small groups around the station and had to cope with mounting public fear – a process made much more difficult by the recent Federation/Cardassian treaty, which placed the station under the joint supervision of Starfleet and the Cardassian Union’s military.

To make matters worse, Captain Egan Manno and the Garuda were summoned away just minutes after the crisis began on an urgent Starfleet mission, leaving the remaining crew under acting-CO Lieutenant Commander Nia Calderan to figure out what had triggered the quarantine systems and keep the station’s population safe from whatever pathogen was present.

Things appeared to have stabilised when Doctor Chythar Skyfire isolated a virus from a former patient and began working on a cure, and a team led by command advocate Lieutenant Commander Msafiri Bakari attempted to restore the station’s systems, but this was cut short when a chilling video message was broadcast across all monitors in the station.

Following the explosion of Deep Space 10’s medical centre by Nikael Kalre and the Maquis Reborn, the Garuda crew moved quickly to regain control of the situation before Kalre’s time restriction for his demands — that the Federation release all remaining Maquis inmates — ran out.

“My fellow Federation citizens: My apologies for causing such distress, but I felt it was necessary to show you how little Starfleet regards those under its jurisdiction and supposed protection. As you now see, they have neglected to spend any time considering your plight – just as they neglected to consider those who have been affected through their appeasement with the Cardassians, the Romulans, and every other peoples except their own. Indeed, the only one to contact me was of insufficient rank to even consider helping you in what could have been a fatal situation.

“They will call me a terrorist. They will call me a monster, but I am not what they say I am. As soon as my ship passes out of range, the nodes will deactivate completely, and you may continue as you are. In return, I only ask that you consider what you’ve observed with your own eyes: Starfleet is blind to its people and cares little for their fate. Think of what I was able to do if I had so desired it — if I were truly the merciless lunatic they claim.

Remember their negligence of a response. The Maquis wish you no ill will – can you say the same of them? Think on that – and what you can do about it.

And perhaps you will even join us.”

— Nikael Kalre, Maquis Reborn

However, it was now assumed that the Maquis Reborn were behind the timing of the quarantine in order to carry out their attack. Nonetheless, a treatment for the sickness that was spreading among the station’s Cardassian inhabitants remained a priority.

Lt. Cmdr. Tristam Core and Lt. Juanita Sanchez, chief engineer of the recently recaptured USS Mercury, devised a strategy to disable the Maquis Reborn’s explosives around the station using an EMP. They also found an unexpected new ally in the station’s indigenous cyborg spiders, who were able to break the station’s lockdown. Lt. Cmdr. Mei’konda and Lt. Evan Delano located a way out of an enclosed dining room with air running out, but tensions were rising among the population as Starfleet officers scoured the area for any lingering Maquis traps.

Meanwhile, the Maquis Reborn left the station, capturing Commander Valen Carys along with them. Nikael Kalre sent one final message to the station’s residents and the Federation, claiming that their lives were now at his mercy and that his ultimate purpose was to demonstrate Starfleet’s inability to stop him and other dangers to Federation civilians. Before he and the Maquis fled, he implored all present to think about what he had spoken and to join the Maquis Reborn’s cause.

The situation had altered by the time the Garuda and Captain Egan Manno returned to DSX. A Cardassian gul had been killed. A new terrorist organisation has developed. While the long, eventful day had finally come to an end, it was evident that its repercussions would be felt at length.
