From the Archive: A look back at the 2004 Writing Challenge

Our community Writing Challenge ran from 2003 to 2014 and provided players with writing prompts six times a year. Prompts could be anything from “a character’s sacrifice” to “where do you see the universe in 10 years.” Over the course of 11 years, an anthology of creative writing was produced.
While the challenge ended in 2014 after a long and successful run, there’s lots to read and remember from this archive. In this column, we’ll be looking back at some of the highlights. This month’s edition includes two entries from July/August 2004. The challenge was simple: Write about academy memories. Let’s take a look at some of the stories that were produced!
“Windows To The Past” by Tyr Waltas
Academy life is something that is often overlooked. This story provides a unique insight into pivotal moments during a cadet’s time at the Academy: leaving home, hijinx with friends, the one class you never seem good at and finally the much dreaded psych exam. Each stage is excellent characterised, leaving you wanting to know more about the cadet’s life after the academy.
“Memories of Change” by Solan
From the start we are thrown into an action packed ride, the story of the first Changeling to join Starfleet. This story does a wonderful job of letting us see inside the character’s head, as they deal with situations ranging from an engagement with the Caradssians to an encounter with the all too familiar playground bully.
