Trained by the best: Antero Flynn

Each month we interview a member of the Academy Training Team for insight on how our training works, and as recognition for all the hard work that goes into training new members each and every week of the year!
This month, we’re sitting down with Antero Flynn, a Lieutenant Commander from StarBase 118 Ops, who has been a highly active member of the team recently.
WOLF: Hello LtCmdr. Flynn! Can you tell us a little about yourself for the folks who may not know you?
FLYNN: Thanks for the Introduction! My name is Aaron and I rejoined 118 in the spring of 2015 after a hiatus of several years. Upon rediscovering my past love, I recruited my wife to the group as well and we have been going strong ever since.
In character I write for the fun loving Risian ‘flyboy’ Antero Flynn. He is the Chief of Helm for Starbase Operations and is a friend to everyone he meets.
How did you learn about our community, and what motivated you to join us?
I originally found the group just browsing the Internet looking for some kind of Star Trek game. I joined 118 not even completely sure what it was, but was hooked from day one! After about two years real life made it hard to continue, but I couldn’t stay away!
How long ago did you join Academy Training Team, and what was it like getting started?
I joined the team in May of this year. The welcome was so warm, and getting into the flow of training went very smoothly. My first experience was under the guidance of the very talented Lt. Cmdr. Maxwell Traenor, who was a great example of what to strive for.
What’s been your favorite part about training so far?
The cadets. It’s such a treat to be around the enthusiasm that most of our trainees come in with. I enjoy not just watching them grow into capable simmers, but seeing the creativity that they bring to both the mission and their characters.
I have to add though that the training group has also been a fantastic outlet for simming with so many of the great writers we have around the fleet that I would normally not get the opportunity to collaborate with.
Are you working toward command?
Command is definately something I am interested in when the time is right. That said, I am very much enjoying the road there.
What advice would give to those who are coming up through the ranks and headed toward the Training Team?
Go the extra mile. I still have such fond memories of my first class as a cadet. My trainer gave me such a great first impression of the group, and years later I can still tell you all about the fun I had on that defining mission. An experience like that is exactly what I think we should all strive to give our new members.
Thank you so much for your time — we’ll let you get back to training!
