Lower Decks interview: Ens. Chris Lambert, Darwin

We’re here with another interview with a newer member of our community. The title of this column is “Lower Decks,” hearkening back to the Star Trek: The Next Generation episode titled “Lower Decks,” in which junior officers aboard the Enterprise-D speculate on the reasons for recent unusual actions taken by the command crew near the Cardassian border.
This month’s interview is with the writer behind Ens. Christopher Lambert playing a human male science officer assigned to the USS Darwin
WOLF: Tell us a little about the writer behind the character — where in the world do you hail from?
Let me think where a middle-aged man, myself included I guess, would start from. I must confess that we have already a big problem because I do not think as confined by time and space. However, to give you a frame of reference to start with, let´s consider this exact moment. Right now, I’m in Brazil, sharing funny ideas about life, culture and science affairs with everyone who dares to listen and to read my poor English writing sims. Yeah, my first language is Portuguese.
I had formal formation on science, and currently, I work as a high school teacher and occasionally as College teacher. Generally speaking, my entire short life on this planet was directly connected with teaching and learning something. Recently, I meant the past ten years, I am maturing the idea that I could transpire, in writing, some of my unorthodox ideas, and here I am now, trying to do that in a funny way together with my companions from USS Darwin.
Well, to avoid being so vague about this writer, I´m not married, I do not have children, not any pet, and right now I do not have even a dwelling place that I could call home. I´m in a transition phase. But I was once married to a wonderful woman, I have a welcoming family and lots of nephews. Recently, I seemed to be chosen as a friend by a newborn white cat. Where this relationship will let us is already to be determined. Besides that, I use my weekends to entertain people about the secrets and potentials of human consciousness, and how to become more aware of oneself.
Were you a Star Trek fan before joining UFOP: StarBase 118? If so, what were your favorite shows and/or movies?
Definitely yes. But I did not have the opportunity to see the majority of the shows until recently. There are several episodes from Star Trek New Generation and Voyager that I must see yet, and a few from DS9 too. However, I saw all the movies on the theater and recently I acquired the digital version of them. I´m a big fan of the scientific and psychological aspect of star trek, and in this way, I love the first shows, the classic and TNG. But the Enterprise series was funny to watch since he told us the stories before the classical era. If I had to pick up only one I would say that the classic show is my favorite.
Is this your first simming experience, or have you done other forms of role-playing before?
I must say that I have been trying some role-playing stuff for quite some time, with several degrees of success and fail. It is all a good experience since it gave me a better looking on how to write. This current attempt, on Starbase 118, especially on USS Darwin, it is my funniest and enlightening experience. There are so many good writers and creative minds around here that I feel at home. Besides that, everybody has a tip, a suggestion to give me all the time. This is awesome.
What duty post are you playing, and how’d you choose it?
Well, it was a natural choice for me to play a science guy. I have so much to share and the science is a good beginning. The fact of USS Darwin is exploring the Delta Quadrant give me a lot of opportunities. I can add to several aspects of the mission, since a background scenery – a strange phenomenon, a new planet, etc – until the psychology of a new alien race, and the complex aspects of multiple realities. Darwin seems to like the point of view of science and that values a lot my efforts and of the entire science department.
What’s been your favorite part of being with the community so far?
Ohh… nice question. I am around here for just five months but everything has been excellent from the beginning. I had a wonderful training officer that ended up to be my first officer on Darwin. He was a former chief science officer and he gave me valuable tips. Then there is the Captain, who is extremely available to help and give orientation and who was my first mentor aboard the ship. He also gives me a lot of room to exercise my creative, inside the boundaries of the SB118 community. Then, there is the entire science department which is amazingly supportive and let me feel at home. The other departments welcomed me so greatly that I feel that I know them for years. I must say that the community here is an important aspect of my flourish work here.
Where would you like to be in a few years? Have a taste of command of your own? Or maybe planning on joining one of our OOC groups?
Well, I do not think too much about future, but It would be interesting to see Lambert at a charge of the science department, and who knows, maybe be the head of a scientific expedition. I like to help as I could and it would be great to return the immense support I have received from SB118. Let´s see what happens.
