Lower Decks: Ensign Will Stead

Lower Decks: Ensign Will Stead

Will SteadWelcome to another edition of the Lower Decks, featuring Ensign Will Stead, the USS Apollo’s newest operations officer. Personal quirks are something that the character is quite familiar with, but first, we’ll hear a bit from Will’s writer. Let’s hear just what he has to say… Ensign?
The writer for Mr. Stead is one Trent Schreyer. Trent hails from Winnipeg, Manitoba, and has been involved with Star Trek for most of his life. From watching the TNG reruns around the dinner table, to recalling old TOS episodes from his childhood days, Star Trek has always been a part of his life. When Trent isn’t near the Trek scene, he enjoys the nightlife, a little Star Wars and other gaming, and researching various aspects of the Star Trek franchises. He dabbled in PBeM groups once before, but stumbled back across them through Google, ultimately landing him a seat in the USS Apollo. “This is my first character since simming with a pbem group when I was 18 ish (13-14 years ago).  [ I’m] Looking to explore this hobby and develop my writing skills.”
Trent plays the role of Ensign Will Stead, the current operations officer aboard the Apollo. When it came to deciding just where to go with the character, and what guidelines he would set for himself, he decided to pull a 180. He decided to go with something that was… “not me. Different parent relationships, different upbringings, causal and easy going. Capable but a conn ops [officer] with a horrid sense of direction and people skills bordering on shut-in.” This sort of character could pose some great challenges not only for the character and those around him, but for the writer as well. Right off the bat, we begin to see the quirkiness of the character within the first few moments of his boarding the Apollo as its helmsman. “He got lost within minutes of arriving on the ship.  Spent the entire time between his first two shifts trying to find his quarters. His poor sense of direction may be good reason he got moved from conn to ops.” Lost in Space, anyone?
When it comes to the future, Trent hopes that Will might develop into a department head, and to really start bonding with the crew. He delicately adds, “Avoiding court marshal is my goal for January. ” Certainly Fleet Captain Jaxx’s reputation preceeds him, but there shouldn’t be anything to worry about, Ensign! Not unless the pranks keep rolling in… “Will just faked a failing receiving comm unit in order to ignore Sb118’s hails while the Apollo departed at an unacceptable velocity. Going a step further, Will felt it was a fun opportunity to actually task a repair crew to ‘fix’ the issue, knowing the would find nothing and search for hours. I love you guys!”  All in good fun, of course. Ensign Stead is sure to be an asset in times to come, and we’ll be sure to follow his journey. Until next time, this has been another edition of Lower Decks. In the mean time, carry on Ensign!
