Captain, first officer, chief of security, chief medical officer. These posts, and many more, are staples of every simming ship and installation. But what about the lesser known positions – the intelligence officers, diplomats, and nurses of the fleet? In this series, we’ll examine some of the less traditional posts and the characters and writers behind them.
Lieutenant Commander Daniel Wood, Hazard Team Leader, USS Discovery
Dan, the writer behind Daniel Wood, has a unique take on his odd job: He also writes Lt. Cmdr. Wood as chief of security. The two roles gel nicely, as you can infer by the way Dan describes the position. “The Hazard Team is basically a special forces unit if you will equivalent to that of the American Navy Seals or British SAS. Its role is operating within the parameters of Starfleet and carries out the missions that require a certain ‘tact’ if you will, those missions that be carried out by Starfleet Marines or indeed Federation or Starfleet Security.”
Whereas the other unusual positions covered thus far, including intelligence and strategic operations officers, spring from canon, the Hazard Team finds its roots in an atypical source: the Star Trek: Elite Force computer games. In the game, the original Hazard Team was created about the USS Voyager by Lt. Cmdr. Tuvok and was utilized in away team situations that were extraordinarily risky or dealt with dangerous hostiles. Presumably after Voyager returned to the Alpha Quadrant the idea of a Hazard Team caught on aboard other ships. According to Dan, “Simming as a Hazard Team leader fits in really well as the Discovery usually carries out special missions, often requiring that bit more firepower. Given the diverse mission structure of the Discovery the Hazard Team and its wide range of skills and be used on multiple levels, whether it’s just a show of the Discovery’s force or indeed defending the ship.”
