The Oddest Jobs in StarFleet IV

Captain, first officer, chief of security, chief medical officer. These posts, and many more, are staples of every simming ship and installation. But what about the lesser known positions – the intelligence officers, diplomats, and nurses of the fleet? In this series, we’ll examine some of the less traditional posts and the characters and writers behind them.
Captain Andrus Jaxx, Starbase 118 on Lieutenant Guy Perry Hunt, Strategic Operations Officer
In every previous article, we’ve looked into the writers and characters behind the odd posts in the fleet, but what about the COs of these ladies and gentlemen? They must be an integral part of the process in creating a unique position aboard their particular ship or installation, and here I chose to interview Jay, 118’s Captain Jaxx, regarding the SOO position. “There is very little in way of description for the position so it is really up to the writer and the C.O. on how they play the role.” Jay actually wrote Jaxx as as an SOO officer once upon a time, and so it would appear that he was more amenable to the position. “The role gets condensed a bit when we are on the Victory, but at the station, the role is limitless.” Further, “I have always written, and viewed the SOO position to be advanced tactical. While the station Security and Tactical Chief can worry about the safety of the station inside and out, the SOO can focus on planning for missions that are off station, or whenever other vessels are involved.” Jay and Bill have slightly different takes on the post, but through the synthesis of these ideas with canon ideas and imagination, unique characters, dynamics, and postings have emerged.
As I had hoped, Jay offered me his thoughts as a CO, as well: “The role of a SOO is not an easy one, and should be reserved for more experienced players. The perfect writer for the position is one that can include themselves in a plot, and deploy their character to help those who need it. If the Security Chief is unavailable due to RL commitments, the SOO can help fill in that role if needed. Bill, Lieutenant Hunt’s writer, does a great job of floating where needed, and always finding something for his character to do. It really is a position that takes someone creative, and at the same time allows junior officers to move into Chief roles sooner.” On an installation like Starbase 118, and within the simming structure of Ops, it seems that the position of strategic operations officer is one odd job that proves its worth for player, CO, and crew.
