Distributed Computing Goes Out Of This World…Again!

If you’ve been around online for a while, then you have probably heard of an older, and pioneering, distributed computing project known as SETI @ Home. The entire point of the project was to put idle computers to work processing massive amounts of data that would have taken the SETI computers years to sift through.
Well, if looking for ET via radio telescopes and data packets sent, and processed, all over the world sounds fun, take a look at the newest distributed computing project to take flight…literally! By distributing the workload over thousands of computers around the globe, SkyNet is building a virtual massive computer capable of going through the insane amounts of data quickly enough to apply them to modern science.
What does this mean for you? If you have spare computing power, which many of us do these days, you can now put that power to work. Allow the SkyNet to run when you are not using your computer and you will be helping radio astronomers from a variety of locations learn more about the universe that surrounds us. Every day, the Earth is bombarded by radio signals from places so far away that it’s difficult to even imagine. With the help of SkyNet, scientists hope to unlock the mysteries that these signals hold, enabling them to prove current theories and even come up with some new ones.
Want to participate? It doesn’t take much to get on board with the SkyNet team. Simply head on over to the SkyNet registration page and sign up. Download the program and then install it on your computer. Turn it on and that’s it! You’ll be helping the scientists of today make discoveries that will have a profound effect on tomorrow.
The world of Star Trek is no longer so far from the reality we live in. By participating in the SkyNet program, you too can help bring humanity closer to the stars.
Head on over to the forums or directly to SkyNet to join the UFOP: Starbase 118 RPG SkyNet Alliance and let’s put our computers together for this common goal!
