Captain’s Corner – Sam Perkins

Captain’s Corner – Sam Perkins

It’s time for another up close look at one of the Commanding Officers that helps our group continue it’s great journey of exploration! This time, we take the turbolift to Deck 1 of the USS Constitution-B and chat with Captain Samuel Perkins. Captain Perkins was nice enough to take time and answer some of our questions.
Nathan Baker: What is your earliest recollection of Star Trek?
Sam Perkins: Watching the episode Shore leave from the original series on my late grandfather’s knee.
NB: How did you find the StarBase 118 group?
SP: PBeM news. Not sure if it is still going but it used to be a website that promoted different sims
NB: What department did you start off in and why?
SP: Engineering. I wanted to be like Scotty.
(EDITORS NOTE: Great choice! LOL.)
NB: Do you have a specific plot you remember from the early days?
SP: It was to a planet called Hells Gate to oversee a Klingon festival. It was when I was assigned to the USS Triumphant. It sticks in my mind because it was the first time I was FO. You never forget something like that. The first time that your actualy helping to guide the mission along.
NB: When did you decide to make the leap to Command?
SP: I was always unsure if I could do it. Then one day I thought “come on, you can do a better job then Captain Janeway!”
NB: What is the best part about being a CO?
SP: Being able to help others to grow by giving them the chance to plan a mission then run it.
NB: In your opinion, what is the most difficult aspect of being a Commanding Officer, either IC or OOC?
SP: Having to deal with [administration] and disputes. Sometimes I am so busy with ship administration that I don’t get a chance to post as much as I would like.
NB: Do you try to have your character conform to a certain “command style”? For example, are you the friendly CO who will have drinks with your crew? Do you distance yourself in order to maintain respect? How would you describe it?
SP: I like to try and be friendly. After all this is supposed to be fun. I like people to be happy; that way they are more relaxed and post better.
NB: Besides being a Commanding Officer, what other activities are you involved with?
SP: I like to read. But my work at the moment takes up a lot of my time.
NB: What advice would you give a new writer who is just getting started with our group?
SP: Listen to others and have fun.
NB: What about some advice for those of us who one day would like to Command a ship/base of our own?
SP: Treat everyone with respect; they put a lot of work into their posts. Never be rude to them and always give praise when they deserve it.
*And now, the 5 questions I will ask all of my interviewees*
NB: Favorite Star Trek TV Show?
SP: Original series (Shatner, Nimoy, etc.).
NB: Favorite Star Trek Movie?
SP: Star Trek IV — the one with the whales!
NB: Kirk or Picard?
SP: Kirk
NB: Favorite Trek-nobabble?
SP: Um, my answer would be Orion slave girl or is that wrong?
(EDITORS NOTE: Also hilarious!)
NB: If you could visit any world from the Star Trek universe, which would it be and why?
SP: Earth. Just to see the world finally at peace.
