USS Wallace

The Steamrunner class, although normally being categorised as escort ships, joined the Defiant class ships as being amongst Starfleet's most powerful military vessels. At Wolf 359, the USS Steamrunner (which was still not fully built, and was operating at around 40% efficiency) showed its might against the Borg, scratching up several important kills. The success of the vessel so impressed Starfleet Command, that they immediately drew up plans to build three more Steamrunner class ships: The Tiger, The Horatio and the Yamato. Once these vessels had been built and tested, several more vessels were built and commissioned; one of these being the Wallace.

The Wolverine upgrade effectively brings the Steamrunner onto a more equal footing with the more modern hull designs.

The USS Wallace was assigned to StarBase 118 midway through 2377. Command of the vessel was given to Captain Valarious McGregor who had been commanding the USS Indria-A until that point. McGregor transfered her crew with her to staff the Wallace. When Captain McGregor left the fleet, the vessel's former first officer, Jay Ross, was selected to replace her. Upon his resignation from StarFleet, the ship was put into stardock to undergo the massive upgrade to "Wolverine" designation. After the completion of this upgrade, it was assigned to Commander Kare'en. A two-year mission completed, Commander Kare'en retired from the fleet. The Wallace was moved back into spacedock to await recomissioning, while her crew was reassigned to the USS Independence.
