Hello Pow fans,

Of all the significant dates to arise throughout the ages, Friday, 21st of December 2012 has to be on top of a very short list. That date of course is the last day of the ancient Mayan calender which has inspired multiple films, untold amount of conspiracy and undoubtedly a lot of fear as it looms closer. The reason for such interest in that day of all others could only be that people will always be curious about the reason why the Mayan calender just stops this year and not some other random point in time.

So the question being posed this week is this, what do you think will happen on Friday 21st of December 2012? Do you think that it will be another normal day like the day after it or do you think that the world will come to a blockbuster finish as the movies suggest? I suppose that they are a few people that might have been able to tell us once upon a time but now it is up to us to figure out. If we have a little fun during the debate all the better.

So come on down and cast your vote and join in the speculation that will no doubt follow.

Stanz: Fire and brimstone coming down from the sky! Rivers and seas boiling!
Spengler: Forty years of darkness! Earthquakes, volcanoes!
Zeddmore: The dead rising from the grave!
Venkman: Human sacrifice! Dogs and cats, living together! Mass hysteria!

Everyone keeps forgetting to turn the big stone calender over, the rest is on the back. ;)

LOL, Commander Vess!
A computer geek friend told me Mayans used a base two numerical system and simply could not go beyond that date within that system given where it started. Sounds reasonable to me.

Same here. It all starts over once it reaches the end. Or the dog buried the rest.

I read somewhere that their calendar didn't account for leap years, so the actual date did already pass...

I have read that the Mayans have several calenders that go over a specific time. SO for me that one calender we know is just one of many and the next starts when the present one ends ;)

Good point Jalana. Okay so there is a question. If the date has passed already or if the calender was designed to be cylindrical, why did they chose this the year 2012? Sure we would love to hope that our civilization will last another 2000 years but that is a big assumption to make for a group such as the Mayans. Cool me crazy but I do like to wonder.

That's what I heard of, too. The correct date was around the time when Typhoon hit Japan.

Because it is the end of a specific cycle. They Mayans were very, very, very cyclical, so it makes sense. Our calendar ends on Dec 31st, but it's not the end of the world when our calendar ends, nor is it a huge deal just because the calendar ended. Just because the Mayans use a different calendar, one that spans quite a long time, we suddenly assign mythical 'world ending' aspects to it.

In a bunch of years, someone is going to start a rumor that the world will end on December 31st, 2999 at midnight and everyone will panic. I can see it now... Posted Image

Great link, Kali. Love this part:

There are however a lot of theories knocking around the Internet which use the end of this calendar cycle to predict the end of the world. They often also mention the fact that Dec 21st is the winter solstice, and that the Sun on the solstice that year is "aligned" with the plane of the galaxy. -after long and tedious explanation of the meaning of it all- In any case the Sun crosses the plane of the Galaxy twice every year as we orbit around it, with no ill effect on Earth.

I agree. Our computers where programed up to 1999; so we fixed it when 2000 came around. The Mayans well... to put it lightly, their civilization is gone so, they can't fix it.

It's become a good excuse for kids who don't want to do their homework. "It's not going to matter. The world is going to end before I graduate anyway!"

See, I heard the opposite, and that the Mayans where quite aware of things like that. The only thing i have seen to refute that was a random post going around on Facebook, but how much is that actually worth? (Hint: nothing)

That said, there is some evidence, though far from conclusive, that noteworthy events did coincide with the end of Mayan cycles. The consensus among most Mayan scholars is this: Will something interesting happen? Maybe (some even say probably). Will it be the end of the world? Only if we go all Fallout on each other.

Pfft, Zombies. The most inefficient monster ever created.

Their primary food source is also their primary predator. That's be like you having to fight a lion every time you wanted a sandwich.
