Since a character can't be injured without permission, do the medical officers always have to be reactive? Is there a way to be more proactive beyond privately asking a player if he wants to be made a patient? It would seem this is a dilemma that every one who plays a doc will face.

When I played an MO if I got bored waiting for action I would usually injure an NPC or two.

LOL, that's a good idea, but right now my only NPC is a tiny white, fluffy therapy dog, so I can't beat her up. I'd better create a few humanoid NPCs. Luckily one of my fellow players has just had an altercation with a Nausican. Repairs will be needed.

They don't have to be recurring. My best sim (in my opinion) was when Alucard had to cut open a nameless engineers chest in the middle of sickbay, reach in, and put his finger in a hole in the mans heart so that he would survive long enough to get into the surgery room. He survived, but was never seen again.

My fellow crewman did; that's why I get to patch him up! LOL. Broke his hand in a few places doing it.

LOL, that is a new and daring take on the Dutch boy with his finger in the dike. Never seen again...are you sure he survived?

Oh wow. Yikes.

The doctor also has to deal with the mental health of other species if they get injured.

Indeed, it is a poor doctor who forgets the body/mind connection. That's why the introdution of counselors into Star Trek was a good thing, but it limited the role of the ship's doctor since a ot of McCoy's work was keeping an eye on the mental condition of his officers, primarily Kirk.

I think since counselors were added,it seemed to put competition between them and doctor when they be working in tandem. The doctor still counsels like McCoy.. I noticed in the Next Generation that closeness of crew and doctor was lost.

Hey I have only just seen your post T.

I don't know if that's the case... On my ship I get the feeling that we went more with the idea of a full on psychologist, so it doesn't really interfere. Besides, if there was an operation to perform for example our counselor couldn't possibly do that. Assist at best, if it was an away mission.

blink1.gif He was never seen again? wacko.png Hmm?

My crew is rarely without injuries which they are trying to hide. So it would be enough to run around with tricorder at active to have something to do.

But I created the PNPC to get the doctors something to do. She is prone to injuries - I made her being born with neural lesion of spinal cord, something like poliomyelitis, but Betazoid version (I didn't give the name to the illness - any ideas?) so shaky on her legs can get easily hurt. Besides she needs regular medical treatments, so if we'll have nothing to do I'll bring her in for a treatment.
