Once you go slug you never go back?

I have often wondered at the subversive (not-stated) role of the Trill in Star Trek. On the show hosts benefit from the prior experience of their symbionts. But what does the first host of a new symbiont stand to gain? Also, the emotions of the symbiont appear to be a dangerous X-factor, sometimes easing the rekindling of old friendships, other times causing inconvenient romantic (or at least sentimental) attachments.

Clearly the Trill symbiont represents a physical embodiment of "past lives" such as people might express undergoing hypnotic regression or might justifiably believe in as an aspect of their religion or spirituality. But the Trill also seem to hint at a transsexual angle, in my opinion. The thoughts and feelings of the symbiont seem to override those of the host in every case of attraction. Was there a subversive message that attraction was primarily mental and that physical form mostly interfered or confused attraction?

Anyone else's thoughts on the matter?

(Also, it would be lame to be a couple joined Trill in love, and later both change to hosts of a new sex. Even supposing they work around the Trill taboos about continuing past romances, everything is different. The bodies and abilities thereof have been changed around. This implies new gender roles as well. As a final compromise, the couple might have to re-learn everything about their attraction, except for its irresistible existence. Love is an odd experience without being a Trill.)

Defining an entire line of Trill hosts in the future. Not experiencing someone else's persona, but certainly making yourself immortal.
