Diplomatic characters can add a whole new depth to a mission. Look at the large number of episodes from the various Star Trek shows, movies and books that have to do with being the mediator of peace talks between 2 different species. Or a species wanting to join the Federation. Even with trade talks or some other area of disagreement.

While in many cases it is the Captain who fills this roll, haveing some one who is the trained professional can add certain depth to a mission.

So far I have done 3 missions that could have used a diplomat and only the last one had one. In fact it was Ensign Labria who performed that duty. I think it was the best of the 3.

The one I did before that had people switching back and forth from the diplomatic team to the ship because of smugglers or to the investigative team looking for the people who killed one of the crew.

As a result the smugglers escaped, we never discovered the individuals behind the murder and the alien government was no closer to a satisfactory resolution to their problem than when we arrived.

The mission ended with no conclusions...
