I noticed the Engineers are statring up a forum to talk about all things related to Engineering.

The Security forum has been sadly neglected. Surely we can't let a bunch of Engineers get the better of us? :)

Is there any interest out there amongst the Security Officers in sharing views on Security and perhaps inspiring each other?

To start off I'll paste part of a duscussion on Security I recently had on the Independence A forum.

"Due mostly to my background as a student of martial arts I see Security being populated by elite warriors. People who exhibit the virtues of courage, honor and valor. Who are very much trying to exemplify the spirit of the samurai of ancient Japan – striving to achieve self mastery through their chosen field of endeavor – in this case of Security.

I very much don’t want to be ( and won’t) be locked into some sort of description of Security as mindless grunts who just stand around waiting for an attack or going on an away mission. Indeed their mission is to protect life, that of their shipmates and also that of any would be attackers where that is possible.

For my part I won’t be simming very many boarding parties attacking the Independence or away missions that involve endless fire fights. Sure they happen from time to time but I’m much more interested in exploring the nature of the characters and if anything their reactions to violence rather than focusing on shooting up the place."

Calling all my fellow Security Officers are you out there?

One of the things that has helped other duty post guilds (like the engineers) is to talk to folks from other ships, and ask them to ask their security crewmates to join you here :)

I've got to admit, there's not a lot to do in Security very often and it's hard for me to come up with ideas about what to write half the time, meaning I get lost in the plot and hope someone is going to bail me out then it never happens. I am trying though.

I wouldn't go into saying that all of security are "elite warriors." Don't get me wrong, yes each is good at thier job. Just saying, thier has to be a fine line between normal and elite. I'm sure you get the jist of what I'm saying. Also as far as security goes. Security is also the police. The keepers of peace, and regulation. I don't see to many sims where security is actively performing that role. Siming more crew disturbances might kill some of that waiting for somthing to happen.

This is exactly the reason we need to bring more folks to this area and discuss ideas :)

I take your point about there being a range of skill levels amongst Security. Your point about also being the police is great. I hadn't thought of that side to Security job at all. I don't even remember there being any disturbances of that kind. :)

The thing about security is that it can take most any form at any given time. To me, it ranks up there with Medical in the many different varieties of things you can sim, and not just in battle situations.

Kassa and some of my PNPCs have delved into (to name a few):
1. Ongoing physical training
2. Security/Marine Fire Team relationship
3. Weapons and armory - this includes the small armories scattered about the ship.
4. Surveillance
5. Phaser range qualifications
6. Brig functions
7. Boarding including retina identification and other safeguards
8. Guarding the Captain
9. Breaking up bar fights
10. Security on Away teams
11. Battles (of course)
12. Co-ordinating Security teams from the Bridge console
13. Sickbay security
14. Diplomatic security
15. Security/Tactical relationship
and more.

In other words Security is all encompassing and on 24/7 duty, yet for the most part, they blend into the background, always ready to give aide to their crew mates, protect the ship from invaders, keep the peace and enforce the "laws" of Starfleet. And it doesn't take a "Super Hero" mentality to be a warrior, and get the job done effectively.

The best approach I've found is being calm, cool and confident.

Hello there.

I would like add to that list, the continued training in order to keep every aspect of Security up to date and in no dormant state.

One of PNPC is a Marine that likes to keep his Team always in motion, via Holo-simulation of combat situation, infiltration, etc.

Also a very important part of training are Emergency Drills.

Never let your Security Officer to become lazy officers.

:)

Yes all of what everyone has to say is right. My feelings on the subject, is that I feel we are turning security more in more into marines. Yes they have the job to protect the ship and its crew and should be highly tuned in that field. Normal day to day security is not that glorious, and is not being simed. Security Officers manage the qulaity of training, evaluation of enlisted personal for promotion, the leadership of the Chief of the Guard who is in charge of the watches, the security of the ship. The enlisted takes care of the policing, but the officers are brougt in during sticky heavy situations. Officers also handle the paper work ;)

I feel we are turning security more in more into marines.

I think that's important. We didn't see the real hardcore security-officer type until the later series. For most of TNG, Security were the benevolent police and body guards. I'd like to see a return to that. If you want a Marine detachment onboard, then relegate those roles to a marine detachment. But, most security officers should be focusing less on tactical movement and more on simple protection and, well, security :)

At the risk of being controversial Admiral :) While it is true that in TNG Security was for the most part the benevolent police and body guards they also had plenty to do firing the ships weapons, raising shields etc to keep them busy.

Perhaps it is partly due to those functions being given away to Tactical that has led to the tendency for Security to become more like Marines?

I received this definition of Security from Doc Satcher of the USS Tiger on another thread. It did give me pause to reflect.

"And you know what good security means - a friend, compassionate prison keeper. One for whom you KNOW, whatever you do, will protect you with his last breath! "

The last part is for Lt Rogers at least a given. The part about being a compassionate prison keeper was something I hadn't considered before. I suspect I've rather missed the larger point here but... I've barely had had any "Brig" situations to deal with but the idea of doing so in a compassionate way is a whole new idea. The potential for dialogue between the Brig's inmate and Security raises some interesting possibilities.

In the military, we don't really treat them with compasion. Its like a constant re-form and or boarder line harassment. The medical up-keep of prisoners is always on point. All so we call them prisoners and refer to them as prisoner, never inmate. Just a little brief of military customs. ;)

Starfleet is neither a fully military nor a 21st Century organization. By the late 24th Century, humanity and its allies in the Federation "have a much more evolved sensibility." We do treat our prisoners as guests, using compassion and reasoning rather than intimidation and pejorative comments. We are not the US Navy.

Thank you Jack - I just didn't know how to say it.

I spent a mission with you on Ronin, and almost left UFOP, I was sooo unhappy with you!

Oh, was your mission with us the one where Shepard got Walker demoted and then started the hostilities on the pirate station in Gorn space? It's hard to keep it all straight...

FTU Convoy and Gorn Eggs - and after yea, yea wellcome aboard - now go and play in sickbay, you Rogers was the first to meet:

Satscher: May I ask why the two of you are crawling around the sickbay?

Hehe, interesting, how easy it is to forget someone. Well for a bigger part it was you and Zssslazt. Later, at the end of mission Brice jumped in for a conlusion about the eggs!

Oh yeah... the mission with the FTU convey that would never end. Mr. Rogers was just at the beginning of his journey toward understanding the concept of "less is more" when it comes to plot twists. He's come a long way since then...
