I know we had tentatively decided on a name, but I'd like to perhaps brainstorm a little more. Perhaps we can try and think of some names that have historical meaning to us, and thus would tie-in somehow with the plans for these people?

Here's the suggestions we have so far:

PLANET:
Palimbus Prime
Fraki II

PEOPLE:
The Palimbi
The Vepela
The Icarians
The Mirans
The V'Naren
The Karon

What name did we "decide" on so far?

It's the Fraki system, and thus the homeworld is "Fraki II". The Vepela live there, and call their planet Palimbus.

I was thinking we would look in some entymological dictionaries to perhaps connect the names of the people to Latin/Greek roots -- maybe concerning the environment, or the ability to sense ephemeral things.

I've been looking when I have the chance. It's hard to be creative sometimes :-\

It's not fun when it's work, huh? I know the feeling. I had to take Latin way back in university...I might be able to dig out my texts and see what I can come up with there...but no promises.

The Lucera from the planet of Lucer? It's from the Latin lucere (to shine). The c is a hard "ch" sound the e sound like an a as in "ate" and the a sounds like the a in "abandon.

I still like the Vepela. Besides, the spieceis that have nanes bassed on laten roots have alwayes gotten a little old. Do you honistly think they knew any laten roots when they dicided what to call themselves?

THEY didn't call themselves that! It's what the Universal Translator came up with, silly. The UT was programmed by Latin Professors at SF Academy.

Vepela sounds fine with me, but I'm having trouble swallowing "Fraki". Don't know why, but it just doesn't sound "real" to me. How about Duronis instead? The Vepela live on Duronis II, and call their planet Palimbus. Anyone?

I'm still having problems with "Vepela" -- same feeling you had w/Fraki, Varaan.

I like "Duronis," but I feel that "Palimbus" sounds too much like "Nimbus" -- which reminds me of one of the TOS Movies.

What about the Laudeans from the Latin laude meaning honor (is that even right?)

I'm pretty sure you're correct.

Laudeans sounds better. Vepela I think sounded too much like Capella (with the High Te'er, and Aka'ar). And honour is a laudable goal (pun intended), but what about the energy and/or nature theme we were trying to go for? Any luck on that front?

If we don't like Palimbus (And I think you're right there, too), what if they called their world Tilahn?

Anyone else have ideas?

Luxans? Luxians? Lux is latin for "light", I think.

Well, when you guys figure out what to call them, Tell me, since I've just about got the world simulation ready to run. The map is drawn and the factions are ready. I need to know how many factions on this planet we need (3-7... someone decide) and what they are called...

Actually, I don't need the latter, but the factions I do. Remember, somtimes Civ destroys factions, so youmay end up with one or two fewer.

Okay, since a decision has to be made, and we were pretty well talked out here, let's got with what we've got:

Race: the Laudeans (like Human)
Native name for system: the Luxis system (like Sol system)
Native name for planet: Tilhon (like Earth)
Federation name for system: the Duronis system (remember, we started with our system, so still like Sol system)
Federation name for planet: Duronis II (like Terra, or Sol II)

Now, if anyone has a problem with any of this, speak now or forever hold your peace.

And Idril, try it with 5 countries/factions and see what happens.

Heh. I ran it with 7 last night and named it after races/people on my ship. The first officer destroyed the captain and made an alliance with the science officer. The engineer and the tactical officer had an alliance against them... heh. There were three of the civs not of any size worth mentioning.

Anyway, gonna run it again today with 5 and see how it goes...
