Learning to use Yahoo!
If you don't have a Yahoo! membership, you'll need to get one now to access our Training and SIMming groups. This short tutorial will show you how to register for a membership.
Hint: You can click on any of the images below to see a larger, clearer version.
Step 1: Find the "Register" Link
Head to the MyYahoo! website. Here, you'll find a screen that look similar to what you see on the left. Find one of the "Sign Up" links and click on either of them. (For simplicity's sake, we've highlighted both links with a red border.)
Step 2: Start the Registration Form
You'll now find yourself at the registration form, which is a fairly straight-forward process. Start with your first and last name in the designated boxes. Feel free to use a pseudonym if you're more comfortable doing so. (But, rest assured that Yahoo! is a well established company that highly values your privacy. For more information on how they use your information, head to their Privacy Policy area.
When you get to the "Yahoo! ID" field, be sure to choose something that you can easily remember and that reflects you personally. Don't choose a name like "Ensign Mark," as your rank will change in our group, and when it does it'll be difficult for you to change your Yahoo! ID. Something like "StarTrekMark" might be more appropriate.
When it asks if you'd like it to create a Yahoo! Mail address for you, be sure to say yes. Even if you already have an e-mail address, you can use this Yahoo! mailbox for a number of other things, like a place to send registrations to. (For example, if you signed up to receive a newsletter about knitting, you could have it sent to your Yahoo! mailbox. That way, if you start receiving unsolicited e-mails, the Yahoo! SPAM filter will automatically delete them for you.)
For the "Alternate E-mail" field, put down the regular e-mail address you use -- but make sure it's reliable! You'll want a way for Yahoo! to get in touch with you if there's ever a problem with your account.
Once you've filled in all the fields, click on "Submit."
Step 3: Activate Your Registration
Now that your registration form is done, you'll need to activate your registration. An e-mail will automatically be sent to the address you put into the "Alternate E-mail" field on your registration form, but it usually takes about 1-2 hours to receive it. Don't fret until at least 24 hours have passed. If you still haven't seen it, you'll have the chance to request another verification after you've signed into Yahoo! for the first time. You can still continue without receiving the activation e-mail so read on!
Step 4: Finish the Registration
Click on the "Continue to Yahoo!" button down at the bottom of the activation-warning page, and you'll now be taken to a page that looks like the one to the right. This simply tailors the Yahoo! homepage to your interests, and you're welcome to choose any boxes you wish. None of them have an effect on how you access Yahoo!.
Click on "Create my Page," and you'll be taken to your "MyYahoo!" page, which you can customize at a later time.
Step 5: Sign In
Sign In using the yellow panel you see on this page, and then type the following address into your address bar in your browser: "http://groups.yahoo.com".
Step 6: Use Yahoo! Groups
The groups page is where all the action happens for us on Yahoo!. Now that you're a Yahoo! member, it'll be easy to manage the lists you're on from this page.
If you've already received some e-mails from one of our lists (or someone else's lists), you should use the Membership Wizard to connect your current Yahoo! ID to the e-mail address you're receiving list e-mails at. Just click on the link highlighted to the right, and follow the instructions.
