New service ribbon: Medical Science

Awards ServiceRibbons medicalscience 2013.jpg New service ribbon: Medical ScienceA new service ribbon has been introduced and is available to be awarded starting immediately. The Medical Science Ribbon recognizes members of Starfleet who participate in, and successfully find a cure to a deadly, infectious disease which threatens to infect an entire planet or crew. This ribbon will serve as recognition for a job well done in saving the lives of others through scientific research, determination, and personal risk.

The USS Tiger prompted the creation of this ribbon, from a mission to Bilire IV during the Klingon Invasion summer blockbuster. A cure was needed for a biologically engineered deadly disease called “The Wrath” which had plagued the Romulan colonists on Bilire VI (also Bilire IV) for over a year, and had begun to infect other species. The crew was successful in aiding the citizens of this planet and finding a cure.

Members who believe their actions since January 2012 may have earned them this ribbon should contact their captain and ask for consideration.

Sims count for March

SimAvgMar131 Sims count for March

This data represents the average sims per vessel across the fleet for each month of the year so far. Some ships will sim quite a bit higher or lower, but this represents the average.

State of the Federation Address, 2013

logo 150px State of the Federation Address, 2013Each year, we look back at our progress over the past 12 months to consider what went wrong, and what went right, and how we can grow in the remainder of the calendar.

This year, FltCapt. Jaxx and Capt. Herrera assembled our State of the Federation Address, which has been posted here on the website. There’s lots of information about what we accomplished, including some charts on our progress over the past few years!

If you have questions or thoughts, head to the forums to discuss the address on its dedicated thread.

Sims count for February

chart 4 Sims count for February

This data represents the average sims per vessel across the fleet for each month. Some ships will sim quite a bit higher or lower, but this represents the average. February is almost always a slower month for sims than January. Whether we will see a higher average count next month is a toss-up — since 2009, March has been lower than February twice, and higher than February twice.

Taking Command: Commander Aron Kells, USS Mercury

Buckingham kells Taking Command: Commander Aron Kells, USS MercuryWith Commander Miles Unum taking a Leave of Absence due to a career change, the USS Mercury now has a new commanding officer. Commander Aron Kells has reported for duty!  Tony, the writer behind Aron Kells, is no stranger to Starbase 118.  Graduating from the academy back in 2005 with the character Lily Ventu, he was first assigned to the USS Victory as a Counselor.  When asked about his time on the Victory he stated, “The ship was running a mission that didn’t have much to do with the counseling department and so I was a pretty inconsistent simmer. Nevertheless, when I finished the mission strongly, I was promoted.”  Lily Ventu remained in service for quite some time.  She made it to the rank of Lieutenant Commander on the Victory and remained in her role until her decommissioning in 2007.

New Captains Council Magistrate for 2012

andrusjaxx 150x150 New Captains Council Magistrate for 2012Each year, the Captains Council chooses a Magistrate who is tasked with facilitating discussion, record-keeping for the council, as well as opening, tabulating, and closing votes. Last year’s Magistrate was FltCapt. Toni Turner, who has been inducted onto the Executive Council as a full member, and as such, must relinquish the position. Following in her footsteps, Captain Andrus Jaxx has been elected as the new Magistrate. Please congratulate him on his new position, the next time you see him around the fleet!

Capt. Tallis Rhul resigns

TallisRhul5 150x150 Capt. Tallis Rhul resignsCaptain Tallis Rhul, a rising star among the command staff and captain of the USS Mercury, has resigned his position due to Real Life career changes. We’re incredibly sad to see him go, and wish him all the best. To leave a “goodbye” message, head to Capt. Tallis’ forum profile and click “Profile Feed” on the left.

Cmdr. Miles Unum, former First Officer of the Duronis II Embassy under FltCapt. Toni Turner, will be taking over as Commanding Officer of the USS Mercury after a crew shuffle between those two ships. He now begins his final steps toward captaincy, undergoing a three month Practical Exam as the CO of a crew.

Survey 2012 Results

The results are in! After a survey of our community, I’ve compiled the data and am ready to release much of the quantifiable results to the fleet. Let’s get started!

Total Responses
Our first piece of data is information about how many people responded to the survey. Here’s a table showing responses per ship:

responses Survey 2012 Results

Pretty amazing that we had an 80% response rate for the fleet! Every ship had at least a 50% response rate, and the Tiger had 100% participation.

Andrus Jaxx launches the USS Apollo

index 1 150x150 Andrus Jaxx launches the USS ApolloThe USS Apollo is the newest vessel in the UFoP: StarBase 118 fleet, and the fleet’s only Achilles-class ship. With her launch, the fleet brings its number of total playable ships and installations up to eight. Jay, the writer behind Captain Andrus Jaxx, the Apollo‘s commanding officer, was kind enough to answer some questions about the launch of the ship, and what makes it so unique.

How did you choose the Achilles-class Apollo, and what can you tell us about her?

When looking over the different classes I was faced with many choices.  My first thought was to take the USS Challenger-A out of drydock.  I started my career on that ship, and for me it would have been a full circle thing.  We already had a Sovereign-class ship in the fleet, the USS Discovery-C, so I elected to go for a little more diversity.  The character of Jaxx is given a strong background in tactical areas, as well as psychology.  As a tactician, I wanted a ship that played to his strengths.  While Jaxx has become a pretty decent diplomat, he knew that there were times you had no choice but to fight.  The Achilles-class ship tipped the hand in the crews favor just a bit.

With StarFleet focusing more on their core of exploration, the Apollo was the first in a redesign of the Achilles class to adapt it for deep space exploration. It received a few more decks, as well as upgraded science sections.  It was designed to have adequate diplomatic facilities to ensure success in first contact missions.

The Apollo will depart from Utopia Planitia on a one year mission to the Typhon Sector.  She is scheduled to report back to Deep Space 5 at the conclusion of that year, for debriefing and reassignment.  I plan on rotating the area of operation around each year.

What will your first mission be?

Jaxx and four other officers were recalled to Utopia Planitia for reassignment.  I have been B-plotting the background for our intitial mission.  Jaxx is given command of the Apollo because of his background.  Over the past few weeks StarFleet had lost contact with 3 ships on patrol in the Typhon Sector.  No sign of the ships or debris have been located.  Their whereabouts are a mystery.  Their first task will be to solve the puzzle.

How will the Apollo‘s split from StarBase 118 Ops be handled?

IC and OOC it is rough to split sometimes.  You get used to writing with a lot of people and you now are faced with the realization that you will no longer get any of their sims coming across your inbox.  I have had the honor of writing with some very talented and creative writers on Ops.  I do find comfort in knowing they have solid characters and at anytime I can check out their group page to follow what is going on.  IC, Jaxx is taking things in stride.  The night before his reassignment he became a father.  Lieutenant Tressa had given birth to their twins, in the early morning hours.  It is a lot for him to process right now, but he is working on it.  He knows there is a lot he has to focus on, in addition to parenthood.  One day at a time is his philosophy right now.  He is very confident the station is in good hands, and more focused on what lies ahead.  He realizes they are just a subspace message away.  The crew was currently on shore leave on a vacation world not different than Risa.  All of the orders were transmitted together, and Jaxx and 4 others would set out the next morning when the arrived at the station.  At which point, Jaxx will hand command over to Commander Nicholotti.  We figure a nice quick runabout cruise will get us to Mars rather zippy, where we can meet up with new officers, and other transfers from around the fleet and launch the ship.

The split will leave Ops fully staffed.  The Apollo will actually be launched with a combination of transfers and Academy graduates.  With the success of the Avandar launching, we decided to give it another go, but on a smaller scale.  There were a handful coming from Ops, and we just received a couple from the Academy.  There are cadets coming through the system very rapidly, and we will quickly reach launching capacity.

Tell me more about the birth of Jaxx and Tressa’s twins, and how Ops’s new CO Kali Nicholotti fits in.

The Tressa, Jaxx, and Kali story is a sad one.  Jaxx and Kali have like a brother and sister relationship.  On her first away mission she put herself in between Jaxx and a Hirogen hunting blade.  She got a prosthetic heart for the deed, and Jaxx never forgot about it.  They are as close as close could be.  Tressa as also bonded with Kali, considering the woman her best friend.  She is the godmother of the twins, so it is very hard on Tressa to lose that person to talk to.  Oddly enough, it is the same thing Jaxx will miss.  Kali has been a voice of reason for a couple of years, it is hard to move on after that.

We wish Jay’s Captain Andrus Jaxx and the writers behind the crew of the USS Apollo the best of luck as they begin their mission to the Typhon Expanse! If you’d like to know more, you can always visit the Apollo‘s wiki page, or keep up with her adventures on her Yahoo! group.

Kali Nicholotti Becomes CO of SB118 Ops

index 150x150 Kali Nicholotti Becomes CO of SB118 OpsStarBase 118 Operations is the oldest simming installation in the UFoP: Starbase 118 fleet, with her first Yahoo! group post in May 1998. In the past fourteen years, Ops has had many commanding officers, and now Ops’s former executive officer and 2011′s recipient of the Rising Star Award, Kalianna Nicholotti. Kali and her writer kindly answered some questions about this inheritance, and about former Ops CO Andrus Jaxx’s launch aboard the USS Apollo.

What in-character circumstances led Kali to this command position?

The IC circumstances of Kali taking command have pretty much been building up over time. Jaxx is an amazing leader IC and OOC, and in both areas he has slowly introduced me to more and more until one day I look up and I’m quite capable of juggling the various things that need to be juggled in order to successfully serve as a commanding officer. Sure, stepping into the position officially is taking things to a whole new level, but both Jay [ed. note: Jay= Capt. Andrus Jaxx] and I know that it is something I am well prepared for. Likewise, Jaxx has done the same for Kali IC, so when the orders come through, it won’t be a huge surprise.

Simming Tips

Unbelievably Imaginable Tip #17
"What does your character see while she looks out the window as the ship enters warp? Describe as best as you can what is happening around you and, perhaps, relate that to what your character is thinking or doing. Form a picture in your mind and try to create an accurate description." -Tracey Townson
